#OnThisDay in 1776, the Committee of Five was appointed by the Second Continental Congress to begin drafting the Declaration. In a letter to Timothy Pickering in August 1822, John Adams wrote about forming the Committee: bit.ly/3J3gTq6

America at 250
On this day in 1775, John Adams proposed turning those New England militiamen besieging Boston into a unified Continental Army and suggested a Virginian named George Washington to lead it.
Adams knew that for the fight against Britain to succeed, the colonies had to look (and fight) like one nation. A few days later, Washington accepted command, and the Continental Congress made it official.

HUZZAH!

Imagine it's June 11, 1776
The Second Continental Congress appoints a Committee of Five to "prepare the Declaration" stating the reasons for Independence to support Richard Henry Lee's resolution.
Independence was on its way and a young Virginian would deliver it.
The Committee of Five—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman—was appointed to draft the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago today.
Jefferson's draft of the document is here at the Library, and will be featured in a new exhibition opening July 3.
Imagine it's June 8, 1776
“The Sensible part of the House opposed the Motion…. They saw no Wisdom in a Declaration of Independence, nor any other Purpose to be answered by it,” you write in a letter to John Jay.
Perhaps *the* most important week leading up to July 4, enjoy :)
This is one of my favorite books of all time, and one I recommend to everyone who asks for a recommendation whenever I get the chance
It paints a beautiful picture of the very different world that used to exist, one where greatness was still prized more highly than equality and equity, and so men did great things
They built magnificent homes, gorgeous palaces, and immense empires. New men built businesses the scale of which had never been seen, and the old elite pushed high culture to its greatest flowering. Those who were talented could and did rise, and those who were incompetent quickly lost it all and fell away
It was a world of consequences good and bad, of rewards for excellence and punishment for falling behind
It was a world of pride and hauteur, but also of public faith and policy rooted in a deep and abiding belief in Christianity
It was a world before tax policy punished the competent for the benefit of the incompetent, a world before the disastrous equality of the present
And in this book, Emmerson shows what that world looked like, good and bad, and how it functioned
Such is the best way to jump into remembering that a different world used to exist
The Great American historian Gordon S. Wood has died. He was a gold standard for American history, especially the Founding Era. To be so into the Founding Era and die on its 250th anniversary must be an honor. Sadly, he did not get to see the 250th Independence Day.

The thirteen colonies were not one people in 1739. Then a young English preacher walked across them and preached to four out of five colonists in person.
By the time he died, they were one people. The unity that threw a king was built in open fields.

It’s wild that it has taken this long for a high quality, theatrical release to be made about George Washington.
While Hollywood wastes billions on sequels, prequels and re-makes, there is a largely untapped treasure trove of real stories from American History.
