We’re slowly entering the era of Public Peer Review. Scientists are becoming more courageous on social media. Before, we could never imagine that #research papers can go viral. Now they can. And the bigger the claim, the wider it’s discussed. ▫️ With this, we’re moving away from “OMG congratulate me, I’ve published in Nature” to “I hope my study is rigorous enough to get through all this public scrutiny”. ▫️ Regarding Ceder group’s paper on the autonomous laboratory for materials synthesis, my thoughts are: 1. First attempts are often clumsy. It’s easy to spot gaps and criticize them. But such studies are important because they set milestones. Follow-up research will polish things much better. 2. Ceder’s group also study how synthesis proceeds in different settings (kinetics vs thermodynamics). There, normally one paper is published per compound, which demonstrates how COMPLEX the synthesis process really is. There is no way one can do it on mass scale. 3. We need authors to include a “Limitations” section in such papers. In my opinion, this article focuses too much on messages such as “autonomous research agents can markedly accelerate the pace of materials research”. But what it also needs is to describe the drawbacks of the study. ▫️ Overall, this underscores that: We must focus on quality. Each paper is a masterpiece of research and logic. Ambitious claims attract bigger crowds and (as a result) intense scrutiny. Public review rocks. It will soon become a norm. ▫️ #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter

I've been advised to avoid the phrase: "No previous studies have investigated..." It's a cheap hook to claim the value of your study. Here are 5 approaches I use in my writing instead: 1. I emphasize the novelty of proposed research Don't focus on the absence of previous research. Claim the originality of your proposed research. Example: "This study proposes a novel approach to [topic] that builds upon existing theories but introduces a unique methodology to address [specific gaps]." 2. Acknowledge existing research & identify gaps Emphasize that studies have addressed the topic. But focus on limitations in the existing knowledge. Example: "While previous studies have explored the relationship between [two variables], they have primarily focused on [specific aspects] and have not adequately addressed [specific gaps]." 3. Identify practical applications or unsolved issues Draw attention to the topical practical implications. Outline the unanswered questions that remain. Example: "The lack of clear understanding of [topic] hinders our ability to [practical application] and raises further questions about [specific unanswered questions]." 4. Highlight the need for more conclusive research Outline the boundaries of existing conclusions. Promote more comprehensive research. Example: "Existing studies have provided valuable insights into [topic], but the field lacks a comprehensive understanding of [specific aspects] because of methodological limitations [or limited sample sizes]." 5. Encourage longitudinal or comparative studies If you face cross-sectional research... Or longitudinal or comparative components lack, You can push for these studies to deepen knowledge. Example: "While cross-sectional studies have provided initial insights into [topic], longitudinal studies are needed to examine changes over time[, and comparative studies are needed to assess cross-cultural differences]."
