As a child, Denise Lavallee had difficulty in the classroom. She didn’t earn her undergraduate degree until she was nearly 50. As an adult, she discovered she has a learning disability. “My favorite expression used to be, ‘I don’t understand,’” Lavallee said. These experiences prompted Lavallee to create the Milestone Nature Center, a series of trails and stations in Barre Town equipped with materials that stimulate the five senses for neurodivergent people who have challenges learning in typical ways or environments. sevendaysvt.com/news/802much/n…
During the pandemic, Rustam Sengupta was living in Canada and watching from afar as his mother in Singapore struggled to support his father, who had dementia. In his family’s personal predicament, Sengupta saw a more universal problem: burnt-out families trying to connect their loved ones with quality care. What if, Sengupta thought, there was a network that people could call on to meet the nonmedical needs of elderly or disabled family members? That question became the impetus for Tuktu, the digital platform Sengupta created to connect those seeking support and companionship with vetted local service providers. Education reform consumed most of the oxygen in the Statehouse this past session. Regardless, lawmakers managed to pass dozens of other consequential pieces of legislation. They banned the toxic pesticide paraquat, repealed land-use restrictions that riled rural residents and boosted funding to expand “accountability courts” to address repeat criminal offenders. Not all of the bills they favored will be signed into law. Gov. Phil Scott vetoed one that would have regulated data centers, for instance, and lawmakers couldn’t muster the votes to override him. The City of Burlington will pay $150,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the mother of a Black teen with disabilities who was roughly detained by police and sedated with ketamine by city EMTs during a 2021 incident. The boy’s mother, Cathy Austrian, had spoken out publicly about her son’s experiences in the years before she filed the lawsuit in 2024. In a statement on Thursday, she said the officers “ignored that my son, who was only a child, was in need of support. “Instead, the public safety officials in our home that day disregarded their obligations to the public, violated their own procedures and policies, and escalated the situation into an extremely dangerous and damaging medical emergency,” she said. sevendaysvt.com/news/burlingto…

For more than half a century, the federal building at 87 State Street in Montpelier has occupied one of the most prominent perches in Vermont’s Capital City. The hulking, three-story granite structure sits just blocks from both the Statehouse and Main Street, anchoring downtown Montpelier with roughly 70,000 square feet of office space and a sprawling rear parking lot. Generations of Vermonters passed through the post office that occupied the first floor. The building once embodied the federal government’s presence in and connection to the Green Mountain State. Today, the historic, 62-year-old structure is vacant. Nearly three years after catastrophic flooding inundated downtown Montpelier, the U.S. General Services Administration is preparing to auction off the property as part of a broader effort to reduce its real estate holdings. A black bear looking for a meal at a Stowe restaurant last week was shot and killed by a police officer after it repeatedly broke into a walk-in cooler. The shooting coincides with an increase in Vermont’s black bear population. On the rise, too, is the number of encounters between humans and the animals, which often find meals at bird feeders and trash bins. The June 3 shooting happened at the Matterhorn, a popular Mountain Road restaurant not far from Stowe Mountain Resort. That morning, town police officer Jamie Bunavicz responded to a call about a black bear outside the restaurant and found one, weighing an estimated 200 to 300 pounds, “laying down near the dumpsters consuming an entire jug of sauce from the walk-in cooler,” according to a police report. sevendaysvt.com/news/stowe-pol…
