Black Texas teen Darryl George continues to fight his school suspension months after he received an initial week-long suspension over his loc hairstyle. He asks a very important question that needs to be answered: "Why should I cut my hair for my education?"
Sister Rosetta Tharpe is credited as the Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Before Elvis, Johnny Cash or Little Richard, there was Sister Tharpe- A Black woman who forged her own sound in a male dominated industry. She does not get the credit she deserves. —Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was an innovative gospel singer widely recognized today as the godmother of rock and roll. Tharpe is the first known artist not only to use an electric guitar in gospel music but to give the instrument a melodic role as important as the voice’s role. During her musical bridges, Tharpe would give free reign to her formidable guitar playing talent, unfolding soaring melodic lines puncuated by deep chordal rips and the occasional jump and leg pump; in essence developing musical tropes in the 1930s that would later be adopted by rock and roll legends Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash. Tharpe’s innovation was not always well-received, with traditionalists regularly criticizing and devaluing her innovation. Despite these attempts to derail her career or persuade her to adopt traditional approaches to gospel music, Tharpe remained deeply rooted in her religious beliefs and values and used her unique musical style to bring gospel music to audiences who would never have otherwise listened to it. Tharpe’s contribution to the development of the rock and roll idiom was finally recognized in 2018, when she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)
A San boy from Namibia 🇳🇦 The San tribe has been living in Southern Africa for at least 30,000 years and they are believed to be not only the oldest African tribe, but quite possibly the world's most ancient race. The San have the most diverse and distinct DNA than any other indigenous African group. What do you know about the San? #Africa
Humans can only survive without water for about 3 days. Gaza has run dry. The blockade on water, food, and electricity is an indiscriminate, collective punishment and a crime. It is cruel and unjust. To save millions of people in Gaza - nearly half children - it must end. Now.
Urgent: Water has now run out in Gaza according to the UN “It has become a matter of life and death”. 2 million people at risk. Statement below 👇🏼
A classic example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Jake Kleinmahon is a Pediatric Cardiologist. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University. He had left the state to complete his fellowship. In 2018 he and his husband decided to return to Louisiana because he believed that the children there deserved quality care. There was only one other heart transplant surgeon there at the time, children had to go to different states for heart transplants. Dr. Kleinmahon became Director of the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program at the local Children's Hospital. However, because Louisiana is a Republican-run state, they passed a series of anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Now Dr. Kleinmahon had to make the best decision for his family. He and his husband and daughter left the state. Now because the state is run by bigots. Now because the constituents are bigots. They have run out one of the two pediatric cardiologists. Republicans are harming women and children at alarming rates. #FreshVotesBlue #FreshWords
Before serving as minister in his native Haiti, scholar Anténor Firmin took a diplomatic post in Paris & joined the Society of Anthropology. His 1885 book On the Equality of Human Races used scientific empiricism to refute racist pseudoscience & pioneer modern anthropology.

36 years ago today, Thomas Sankara, a revolutionary African leader, was assassinated by French imperialists. Sankara drove out French imperialism from Burkina Faso and withdrew from IMF and made the country non-reliant on foreign aid. He was assassinated in a coup led by his close ally, Blaise Compaoré supported by French imperialists As far as African leadership goes, Thomas Sankara was cut from a different piece of cloth. Here are some of his accomplishments, ONLY 4 YEARS in power (1983-87): – He vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles in a matter of weeks. – He initiated a nation-wide literacy campaign, increasing the literacy rate from 13% in 1983 to 73% in 1987. – He planted over 10 million trees to prevent desertification – He built roads and a railway to tie the nation together, without foreign aid – He appointed females to high governmental positions, encouraged them to work, recruited them into the military, and granted pregnancy leave during education. – He outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy in support of Women’s rights – He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of the ministers. – He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and forbade the use of government chauffeurs and 1st class airline tickets. – He redistributed land from the feudal landlords and gave it directly to the peasants. Wheat production rose in three years from 1700 kg per hectare to 3800 kg per hectare, making the country food self-sufficient. – He opposed foreign aid, saying that “he who feeds you, controls you.” – He spoke in forums like the Organization of African Unity against continued neo-colonialist penetration of Africa through Western trade and finance. • He called for a united front of African nations to repudiate their foreign debt. He argued that the poor and exploited did not have an obligation to repay money to the rich and exploiting – In Ouagadougou, Sankara converted the army’s provisioning store into a state-owned supermarket open to everyone (the first supermarket in the country). – He forced civil servants to pay one month’s salary to public projects. – He refused to use the air conditioning in his office on the grounds that such luxury was not available to anyone but a handful of Burkinabes. – As President, he lowered his salary to $450 a month and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer. – A motorcyclist himself, he formed an all-women motorcycle personal guard. – He required public servants to wear a traditional tunic, woven from Burkinabe cotton and sewn by Burkinabe craftsmen. (The reason being to rely upon local industry and identity rather than foreign industry and identity) – When asked why he didn’t want his portrait hung in public places, as was the norm for other African leaders, Sankara replied “There are seven million Thomas Sankaras.” – An accomplished guitarist, he wrote the new national anthem himself 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)
One of few oldest Universities in the world. T0day’s màthematics stàrted thère, Timbuktu in Mali 🇲🇱 had its humble origins in about 11○○ BC, when it was founded as a seasonal camp by Tuareg nomads. However, its location just on the edge of a desert meant that it became an important trading capital, and by the 14th century it was fundamental to the salt and gold trade. Its educational tradition dates back to its 13th-century incorporation into the Mali Empire, where the dominant religion was Islam, and several mosques were founded. #Africa
Mum Bett was one of the first enslaved black American to sue for freedom and win in Massachusetts. As a free woman she took up the name Elizabeth Freeman. She was W.E.B Du Bios great grandmother. Her case served as precedent in the state that brought an end to the practice of slavery in Massachusetts. Freeman's real age was never known, but an estimate on her tombstone puts her age at about 85. She was buried in the Sedgwick family plot in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She died in 1829. Freeman was among the first enslaved black Americans in Massachusetts to file a "freedom suit" and win in court under the 1780 constitution, with a ruling that slavery was illegal. Her county court case, Brom and Bett v. Ashley, decided in August 1781, was cited as a precedent in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court appeal review of Quock Walker's "freedom suit". When the state Supreme Court upheld Walker's freedom under the constitution, the ruling was considered to have informally ended slavery in the state. LIFE & TRIAL: Elizabeth Freeman was illiterate and left no written records of her life. Her early history has been pieced together from the writings of contemporaries to whom she told her story or who heard it indirectly, as well as from historical records. Freeman was born into slavery about 1742 at the farm of Pieter Hogeboom in Claverack, New York, where she was given the name Bett. When his daughter Hannah married John Ashley of Sheffield, Massachusetts, Hogeboom gave Bett, then in her early teens, to them. She remained with them until 1781, during which time she married and had a child, Betsy. Her husband (name unknown, marriage unrecorded) never returned from service in the Revolutionary War. Throughout her life, Bett exhibited a strong spirit and sense of self. She came into conflict with Hannah Ashley, who was raised in the strict Dutch culture of the New York colony. In 1780, Bett prevented Hannah from striking her daughter Betsy with a heated shovel, but Elizabeth shielded her daughter and received a deep wound in her arm. As the wound healed, Bett left it uncovered as evidence of her harsh treatment. Soon after the Revolutionary War, Freeman heard the constitution read at Sheffield and these words: “ All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness." —Massachusetts Constitution, Article 1. Bett sought the counsel of Theodore Sedgwick, a young abolition-minded lawyer, to help her sue for freedom in court. Sedgwick willingly accepted her case. He enlisted the aid of Tapping Reeve, the founder of America's first law school, located at Litchfield, Connecticut. The case of Brom and Bett vs. Ashley was heard in August 1781 before the County Court of Common Pleas in Great Barrington. Sedgwick and Reeve asserted that the constitutional provision that "all men are born free and equal" effectively abolished slavery in the state. When the jury ruled in Bett's favor, she became the first African-American woman to be set free under the Massachusetts state constitution. The court assessed damages of thirty shillings and awarded her compensation for their labor. After the ruling, Bett took the names Elizabeth Freeman. LEGACY: The decision in the case of Elizabeth Freeman was cited as precedent when the State Supreme Judicial Court heard the appeal of Quock Walker v. Jennison. Walker's freedom was upheld. These cases set the legal precedents that ended slavery in Massachusetts. Vermont had already abolished it explicitly in its constitution. 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)
On this day in 1914, Garrett T Morgan patented his invention, the Gas Mask. His invention saved countless lives. He also invented the automated electric traffic light signals 🚦, an improved sewing machine and a hair-straightening product. —Garrett Morgan was an inventor and businessman from Cleveland who invented a device called the Morgan safety hood and smoke protector in 1914. On July 25, 1916, Garrett Morgan made national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan and a team of volunteers donned the new “gas masks” and went to the rescue. After the rescue, Morgan’s company received requests from fire departments around the country who wished to purchase the new masks. The Morgan gas mask was later refined for use by U.S. Army during World War I. In 1914, Garrett Morgan was awarded a patent for a Safety Hood and Smoke Protector. After witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage, Garrett Morgan took his turn at inventing a traffic signal. Other inventors had experimented with, marketed, and even patented traffic signals, however, Garrett Morgan was one of the first to apply for and acquire a U.S. patent for an inexpensive to produce traffic signal. 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)
48 years ago today, the first black-owned television station in US, WGPR-TV Detroit, begins broadcasting. WGPR-TV was the first black American fully owned and operated television station in the U.S., which kicked into the air on September 29, 1975, when it made its first broadcast. WGPR-TV stood for “Where God’s Presence Radiates,” and the station, situated in Detroit, Michigan, was founded by William Banks Venoid. The station first aired on September 29, 1975, through channel 62 in Detroit, Michigan. It was marketed towards the urban audience in Detroit, Michigan, which in that market denoted the programming for the black community. 🖋️follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup ko-fi.com/africanarchives
J. Marion Sims “the father of modern gynecology” purchased Black women slaves and used them as guinea pigs for his untested surgical experiments. He repeatedly performed genital surgery on Black women WITHOUT ANESTHESIA because according to him, "Black women don't feel pain.” J. Marion Sims is called the "Father of Gynecology" due to his experiments on enslaved women in Alabama, who were often submitted as GUINEA PIGS by their plantation owners who could not use them for sexual pleasure. Anarcha, one of those women, was an African-American slave woman who was forced to regularly undergo surgical experiments while positioned on Sims' table, squatting on all fours and FULLY AWAKE without the comfort of ANY anesthesia. It's been calculated that Anarcha was operated on roughly 34 times between 1845 - 1849. These operations helped Dr. Sims hone his techniques and create his gynecological tools. It would be more than appropriate to credit Anarcha, along with other nameless slave women, as the "MOTHERS OF GYNECOLOGY" 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)
A black female student at Babcock High School encountered racial discrimination from a group of white female students. However, the school administration downplayed the incident, not acknowledging its racial nature. As black parents, it’s crucial to recognize the psychological impact of sending your children to predominantly white schools where they may not feel desired or welcomed.
Mansa Musa Keita __ Research has revealed that the richest person of all time lived in the 14th century in West Africa and went by many names, including Kankan Musa Keita, Emir of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, Conqueror of Ghanata and the Lion of Mali II, but today he is usually referred to as Mansa Musa. Adjusting his wealth to modern values, he was worth about an estimated $400 billion as the Sultan of ancient Mali, which controlled the trade routes across the Sahara Desert. Mali empire was a central to several key trading routes in the world, and with the support of well trained army, Mali became a strong and powerful empire. Meanwhile On a pilgrimage of one of the Emperors of Great Mali Empire to Mecca in 1324 AD, Mansa Musa, brought so much money and gold with him that his visit resulted in the collapse of gold prices in Egypt, Arabia and the western world. It took another twelve years for the economies of the region to return to what it was. How come we hardly hear about this great African Empire? #Africa
Republicans will shut the government down in 2 days for sh*ts & giggles...but the kicker is while essential workers will be forced to work without pay, they will still collect a paycheck. This is why we tried to warn y'all that Republicans are unfit to govern.
