"Well everyone should just talk about it!" Flavia says to me last night after I explain about the blouse I received from President Zelenskyy's #BringKidsBack project. Indeed, even though since before the invasion began I have written thousands of posts related to the war in Ukraine, far too little has been said about one of the most painful events of this genocidal war: the abduction of Ukrainian children. And for once I give you some official information: - The Russian (!!!) Commissioner for Children's Rights has publicly admitted that Russia intends to "naturalize" 700,000 Ukrainian children; - 19,546 such cases of abducted children have already been documented, and this figure does not include children abducted in 2024 and 2025; - 4390 Ukrainian children orphaned or without parental care were abducted; - 1700 children are reported missing - i.e. neither Ukraine, the international community nor Russia know where they are; - Yale University's Humanitarian Research Laboratory, at least 21,314 children have been abducted from Donetsk and Lugansk and deported to Russia, scattered in 21 different regions of the federation; - 1.6 million children are currently under illegal Russian occupation, to be implemented in the Russian program of uprooting, uprooting, and subsequently turned into Russia's tools of war in the coming years; - So far only 1,263 children have been returned by Russia. President Zelenskyy started this international program, building a coalition of 41 states fighting for their return home. Romania, to our joy and pride, is part of this coalition and is getting involved - I admit that I do not know how and in what way - in the fight against these war crimes, as defined by the International Criminal Court. You now have the necessary information, official and from credible sources, and even recognition by the Russians of these criminal programs against children. Being a father, when I started last night to research the subject in depth, it literally made me sick - and believe me, I have seen and experienced things on the front lines that would make many faint, but what I have read in the last few hours, added on top of what I knew, added on top of the killing of the children in Krivih Rig and Sumy the other day, thinking that Sara would be in any of these situations, makes me physically sick. Yes, Flavia's question is correct: why isn't EVERYONE talking about this? I don't know, but I have the chance to do so and please pass this information along. As widely as possible. Because it is essential, in order to understand in its entirety, the horror of Russia, to talk about this subject, to make it known. The drama of these children must be known. Only then can we do something: ask our decision-makers what their position is and what their plan is for this, what they have done, what they are going to do.
