@Incictus_V Yea he tells us there are two poles to humanity: The height is Greekness, everything else is mere barbarian And at the height of Greekness you have a split: Athens and Sparta Thucydides was made possible by Athens but from that he’s capable of praising and critiquing both

@Incictus_V Thucydides is clear that he himself was possible only because he was an Athenian, and so that much about Athens being the school of Hellas is correct, and he tells us they were at their height prior to the war And so everything afterwards is decline

@Incictus_V Two small but definitive points on Timaeus: — In the dialogue itself we’re told the discussion cannot be referring to the Republic (as is typically claimed of it) — Socrates is silent throughout the entirety of Timaeus’s logos, and so any agreement is entirely inconclusive
@Incictus_V @dominbydigdug Initially I tried teaching myself Homeric Greek so that I could test out of the entire requirement in order to take more philosophy courses instead That was one of my dumbest decisions in grad school, and in my case that’s saying a lot
@Incictus_V @dominbydigdug Our department had us begin by translating Xenophon in our first year, and in the second for the (sadly and mere) “intermediate” competency we did the Laches
@mephistophalic Yes, everything being said there of Nietzsche displays a laughably facile understanding of the thought of Nietzsche It’s so facile that I find it hard to believe he’s even read Nietzsche if that’s his takeaway from the reading
@dominbydigdug @Incictus_V The Symposium is particularly difficult because of how it’s being retold by someone who’s himself retelling what he was told — thus making the grammar requirements particularly important, yes? Euthyphro is great one
@Incictus_V I’m jealous I only learned Greek to the “intermediate” level as part of my requirements, and there simply wasn’t enough time for Latin If I could do it over I would’ve lived in the classics department learning both to the advanced level for my philosophy studies
