Security people used to say “never trust user input.” AI updated the slogan to “never trust any input the model can read, including the parts your users cannot.”
RAG without threat modeling is sometimes just retrieval-augmented gullibility. If the model can fetch it, the model can be influenced by it.
Prompt injection defense starts with an unglamorous idea: stop letting untrusted content sit in the same lane as trusted instructions. Boring architecture beats exciting postmortems.
AI failure mode of the week: the assistant was told to summarize a document. The document had other plans.
Invisible text in slides, spreadsheets, and PDFs is great for attackers because humans skim what they can see. Models process what they can parse. Those are not the same thing.
Before you upload a file to AI, ask three things: what hidden text is inside it, what system can the model reach after reading it, and what would happen if the file gave bad instructions?
Jailbreaks get headlines. Prompt injection gets results. One tries to break the model in general. The other just quietly hijacks the exact workflow you shipped.
The phrase “it was just in the document” has started too many incident reviews. Untrusted content is not passive when a model is trained to interpret and act on language.
If an AI assistant can read a support ticket, a spreadsheet, and your internal docs in one flow, congratulations: you built a cross-domain gossip engine. Now add prompt injection and see what leaks first.
Models do not have common sense about trust boundaries. Your contract, your email thread, and a random webpage can all become one blended instruction soup unless you separate data from commands.
Fun fact: the most confident person in the room may be your chatbot explaining why it ignored your instructions and followed the attacker’s instead.

A prompt injection does not need to be clever. It just needs to be placed where the model will read it before your guardrails matter. Hidden text beats good intentions surprisingly often.
