When temperatures drop like they did in February, electric bills go up. Kentucky’s average temperature in February was about 16 percent colder than February 2020.
If you own a heat pump, keep your winter costs in check by leaving your thermostat alone. Adjusting the thermostat constantly can cause expensive supplemental heating to kick in, which raises your bill.
To keep energy bills in check before the bitter cold arrives next week, stop leaks under doors by installing weather-stripping, a door sweep, and adjust your threshold. Caulk air leaks around pipes that go through any outside wall.
If you were surprised about your January bill, remember that temperatures for the month this year were 13 percent below 2020, and students and parents may have been working from home. Cold temps and people at home increase usage.
Even if you don’t touch your thermostat, cold weather will raise utility bills. If the furnace is set on 70 degrees, and it’s 30 outside, your HVAC system works harder to keep the house 40 degrees warmer.
