@fastmaster You spent MANY more hours working with him than I did. The thing that amazed me was, he was such a nice man, how in the world did he ever win 2 championships? You had to be bad to the bone in that era and I never saw that in all the years I was around him. Just so gentle. RIP Ned

@Devin_Kupka Forgot I had this. You can see both. On the right, dirt track was going to be a quarter mile, paved track on the left was going to be a half-mile to replace the track at the Fairgrounds. As we know, you can't replace the track at the Fairgrounds. #history

@FitJay1983 @500Indy1911 Bourdais average finish from the CART / ChampCar era is 5.24. That's with 74 starts. His IndyCar average is 12.57 with 151 starts.

This one surprises me. Danny Ongais, who won six IndyCar races in the 70s and had 32 top 10 finishes in 87 starts (in an era when the DNF rate was high) never finished second in a race. Third thru 10th, but never second.

@champwebdotnet @James_R_Selig Not sure I understand the question. There have been quite a few drivers-turned-owner who have won the 500. Lou Moore ran 9 races in the 20s / 30s then won 5 as an owner. Parnelli won as a driver and owner as did Rahal. Chip and Michael drove in the 500 then won as owners.

Looking like this will be the first Indy 500 qualifying in a very long time, if not the first ever, where drivers don't have the option to make multiple runs to record a time. Today it's going to be one-and-done to set the initial order.

Even in 2024 there was one delay with the VeeKay crash and Larson waved off. Four cars didn't go - waiting on better conditions. But they did 27 complete runs in two hours and 29 minutes. I don't have the cleanup time on VeeKay.

@ccsmith1989 That's a good question that we've never been able to find an answer to. In 2016 they went green at 2:20 and extended the time to 7pm. But we think there were some sessions that went almost until dark back in the day.

@tonydindy In 2023 the 31st car took the checkered two hours and 27 minutes after quals started. They went through the line with no delays. In 2014 they did 32 cars in 2:28. It can be done under 3 in a perfect world.
