What pro-rata vs fixed reward means and how it affects your payout You enter a competition, you trade, you finish in the top 3 and the prize is lower than what you expected. And you're left wondering what happened. Usually it comes down to two words: prize structure. There are two ways competitions distribute prizes: 1. Fixed reward means the prizes are set before anyone registers. For example: First place gets $500, second gets $300, third gets $150. Ten people enter or ten thousand, the number on the tin is the number you get. 2. Pro-rata is when the prize pool gets divided based on how everyone performed relative to each other. How much you walk away with depends on who else is competing. A solid run in a packed competition pays out differently than the same run in a less crowded competition. Why prize pool size alone is a bad way to pick a competition A $500K prize pool sounds great. Until you find out 55,000 traders are competing for it and only the top 1,500 win anything. Your odds of winning something: less than 3%. Prize pool size is the most misleading number in trading competitions. So here's what the prize pool doesn't tell you: 1⃣ Number of winners vs number of participants. A smaller competition with 200 traders and 50 winners gives you a 25% shot. That's a fundamentally different bet. 2⃣ What the reward is paid in. $450K in a native token that drops 40% after the competition ends is not $450K. 3⃣ The fine print. KYC requirements, minimum volume thresholds, geographic restrictions. Most traders find out after the fact. The prize pool is the headline. Everything else is the real story.
