So far my takeaway from Steve Jobs’ biography a couple dozen pages in is that the whole thing (the book and his life) is about hyperstition: having structural support for your felt sense of specialness lets it accumulate into concrete reality. Jobs was obviously smart, but had his upbringing consolidated “conformity is the highest ideal, just succumb to whatever makes things most convenient for you” into his personal ontology rather than “we chose you, we want you to be exactly what you are and we trust that you will figure it out your own way,” that smartness would have gone to waste as it has for countless people with a creative spirit muffled by circumstance. In addition to hyperstition, another prevalent theme I sense in his life is theurgy. I have often thought of Jobs as an unconscious Hermes devotee. Hermes is the trickster god of communication and commerce; Jobs was a pristine phenotypal representation of Hermes’ archetypal domains (him being a prankster is very on brand, atop of his vast influence on both commerce and communication through Apple). But he was hubristic, and we all know how much the gods—especially the tricksters—relish in humbling humans. So it’s rather morbidly fitting that he met his demise by believing he could outsmart his cancer by only eating fruits, after having made himself great with a company decorated by one. I wonder how much different his destiny might have been had he had more humility—perhaps he would never have accomplished a fraction of what he did by being arrogant! But it is fascinating to consider whether being conscious of his archetypal resonance might have calibrated him better to the actual limits of his own capability.
