I don’t know. Lists make themselves plain. So many frameworks other essays trade in are pretty well pret-a-porte, too, and pass for thinking, no matter how many times they’re deployed. Give me your notes: I’ll make of them what I can.

@brecht_dp This novel doesn't trade in analysis and is as light as a feather. But in doing so captures more about how shit goes down than any number of ponderous tomes. Ishiguro does surface in ways that really confound. This, Remains, and Unconsoled are on a very short shelf.

@WhatHoARat Moby Dick is more like a...grimoire? The whole thing is incantatory, just...apples to...jaguars. But Melville's clunkier--to use that word--mode serves him better in stories, perhaps? Benito Cereno is very 19th century, but is wild. His poetry is very much of its era, too.

@nguyenhdi I believe Anthony Powell wrote somewhere that Dickens understood very little about money (he either had a lot or none and careened in between) and Balzac understood money more as he had to negotiate his constant debts. But Trollope understood money far better than either...

@DAMendelsohnNYC @BretVDB I mean, I adored The Faerie Queene, but it does feel forgotten…part of its charm (see Catherine Nicholson on its strange readerly history?) Yesterday, I was looking at a volume from my grandmother’s Book of Knowledge and came across the summary (for children) of Spenser.
