Most people probably don't realize how bad news China's Deepseek is for OpenAI. They've come up with a model that matches and even exceeds OpenAI's latest model o1 on various benchmarks, and they're charging just 3% of the price. It's essentially as if someone had released a mobile on par with the iPhone but was selling it for $30 instead of $1000. It's this dramatic. What's more, they're releasing it open-source so you even have the option - which OpenAI doesn't offer - of not using their API at all and running the model for "free" yourself. If you're an OpenAI customer today you're obviously going to start asking yourself some questions, like "wait, why exactly should I be paying 30X more?". This is pretty transformational stuff, it fundamentally challenges the economics of the market. It also potentially enables plenty of AI applications that were just completely unaffordable before. Say for instance that you want to build a service that helps people summarize books (random example). In AI parlance the average book is roughly 120,000 tokens (since a "token" is about 3/4 of a word and the average book is roughly 90,000 words). At OpenAI's prices, processing a single book would cost almost $2 since they change $15 per 1 million token. Deepseek's API however would cost only $0.07, which means your service can process about 30 books for $2 vs just 1 book with OpenAI: suddenly your book summarizing service is economically viable. Or say you want to build a service that analyzes codebases for security vulnerabilities. A typical enterprise codebase might be 1 million lines of code, or roughly 4 million tokens. That would cost $60 with OpenAI versus just $2.20 with DeepSeek. At OpenAI's prices, doing daily security scans would cost $21,900 per year per codebase; with DeepSeek it's $803. So basically it looks like the game has changed. All thanks to a Chinese company that just demonstrated how U.S. tech restrictions can backfire spectacularly - by forcing them to build more efficient solutions that they're now sharing with the world at 3% of OpenAI's prices. As the saying goes, sometimes pressure creates diamonds.

Important Rule for Life: When in doubt, zoom out. Being perpetually zoomed in creates two challenges: 1. Struggle feels bigger than it is. 2. Growth feels smaller than it is. The 10,000 foot view provides perspective—on the manageable nature of your struggles and the impressive nature of your growth. Two effective ways to zoom out: 1. Vertically: Zoom out via "altitude" and see the bigger picture context of the moment. 2. Horizontally: Zoom out via “mental time travel” to the past or the future and observe the present through that new lens. Go back 10 years and think about how your past self would be in awe of where you are today. Go forward 50 years and think about how your future self would give anything to be back doing the things you get to do today. Both can work wonders. Always remember: When in doubt, zoom out.

Many founders who raised large amounts of money ($10m+) in 2020-21 but subsequently realized they don’t have PMF, are going through an excruciating psychological journey right now. On one hand, they feel beholden to employees and investors to keep building, pivoting, doing anything to live up to their perceived commitment to their stakeholders to build an enduring company. On the other hand, they have a sinking feeling that they are just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Their heart just is not in it. There is a deep-felt malaise. The more money a founder has raised, the deeper this predicament. I just had the first such founder return a good chunk of invested capital back to investors, because they couldn’t take the pressure any longer. The relief they felt when they realized investors and employees were on board and 100% supportive of their decision, was palpable. (All employees received solid severance before the company shut down). Founders - ultimately it’s your call, but know that there is a graceful way out. Chasing endless pivots trying to find PMF is a bridge to nowhere. Investors - let’s have the grace and courage to tell founders this option is available to them. The founder told me that the reason they ultimately decided to return the money stemmed from a convo with me several weeks ago, when they told me about their latest pivot, and I told them I’m supportive “as long as their heart is truly in it”. That phrase stuck with them, they introspected and ultimately realized their heart was not in it.

I personally use Topaz Gigapixel (it's paid) but there're free options you can use. If you use Stable Diffusion locally it has free upscalers, Photoshop and Lightroom also can upscale and there're few free websites like bigjpg.com (it gives 25 images a month to upscale for free).
