On 16th June 455 the Vandal Sack of Rome finally ended. It had started on 2nd or 3rd June and was so thorough that the word Vandal eventually became synonymous with wanton destruction and remains so to this day. The background is complicated; the event took place in the era when Roman imperial authority and effective military action was breaking down in the western half of the Empire. The Vandals, along with another Germanic people, the Suevi and the (non-Germanic) Alani had been pushed towards Gaul by pressure from the westward movement of the Huns. They had crossed the frozen Rhine on 31st December 406 and had been able therefore to get through the Roman defences. The Vandals moved down through Gaul and into Spain where they remained until 428 when their greatest ruler, King Gaiseric or Genseric - (ca 389 – 477) led his people, possibly as many as 80,000, across the Mediterranean into North Africa. The Vandals had succeeded in acquiring a fleet, something which no other barbarian people had done. The Codex Theodosianus of 438 had imposed the death penalty for anyone instructing barbarians in ship-building; however, the Vandal fleet may have been captured grain vessels rather than ships specifically built for them. That law was not enforced and was, in any event too late as by 439 Carthage and the entire North African province were by then under Vandal control. As North Africa was part of the “Granary of the Empire” it is not altogether surprising that the imperial authorities felt they had no option but to recognise Gaiseric’s fait accompli, however unwillingly they did so. A treaty of 442 was agreed in order to formalise relationships with the Vandals and at the same time, a betrothal was arranged between the Emperor Valentinian III’s daughter Eudoxia, then aged about three, and Huneric (? – 484), Gaiseric’s eldest surviving son. The Emperor Valentinian III was assassinated in March 455 by the Praetorian Prefect Petronius Maximus who then claimed the imperial throne and married Licinia Eudoxia, Valentinian’s widow. He also cancelled the betrothal between Eudoxia, by that time sixteen, and Huneric, Gaiseric’s son, arranging instead a marriage between Eudoxia and his own son, Palladius. This broke one of the terms of the 442 agreement and meant that Gaiseric could claim not only that Petronius Maximus’ regime had violated the treaty but could present himself as the avenger of the Emperor Valentinian III, his son’s would-be father-in-law. In May 455 the Vandal Fleet set sail for Italy. Rome had been sacked earlier in the century in 410 by the Visigoths under Alaric; it had escaped a planned Hunnic attack, under Attila, in 452, whether due to the intervention of Pope Leo I “the Great” or some other reason, and the possibility of yet another attack caused widespread panic. Many fled the city taking what possessions they could and among those planning to flee was apparently Petronius Maximus himself. On 31st May 455, as the Vandal fleet neared the Italian coast, the palace guards mutinied and murdered Petronius Maximus who had been widely held responsible for the imminent invasion. On either 2nd or 3rd June King Gaiseric and his warriors disembarked at Ostia, the port of Rome and once again, so the story goes, Pope Leo set out to meet a barbarian king and to plead for the city. However, Gaiseric refused to be talked out of his right to plunder but promised that there would be no killing or torture to discover the whereabouts of hidden treasure, nor would there be destruction of buildings whether private or public. And so, for 14 days the Vandals systematically stripped the city of its wealth and treasure, the imperial regalia itself, gold and silver vessels from the palaces, churches and the Jewish synagogue, statues and works of art, and even the copper roof, or at least part of it, was taken from the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus as were roofs from other buildings. #archaeohistories

It’s because as the early years of industrial production moved people from agrarian living on family farms & the feudal mode of production became obsolete, the baseline social/political unit transitioned from the PATRIARCHAL FAMILY UNIT to the ATOMISED INDIVIDUAL INDUSTRIAL LABOURER. Accordingly, the PATRIARCH of the FAMILY UNIT was no longer able to speak on behalf of & vote on behalf of the entire families political interests as a single unitary entity, because when each of his children, he & his wife all migrate from the country to the city & work in different factories, they suddenly have separate and distinct political identities and needs, and so his voting on behalf of a singular political unit , the family, was no longer feasible and didn’t allow their interests to be represented with the requisite specificity, because they were now all politically active subjects, each individually contracting their labor to different commercial entities, each family member was now likely to live in different homes/at different addresses, work different jobs in different industries & accordingly, they now often had either complementary or contradictory political objectives, demands & interests, but they no longer had the SAME SINGULAR POLITICAL INTERESTS AS A FAMILY UNIT so THE MALE PATRIARCHAL privilege of voting on the entire families behalf was effectively liquidated & redistributed to each 18+ individual within the family, as a separate and unique political subject, and a separate and unique voter to whom politicians & CORPORATIONS could peddle their wares.
