@wompstompfilms @joerussotweets Yes that’s an indie rate. Exactly. They offered the rate, the job was accepted because it’s a good way to get experience. It would be a generous thing to do to bonus them up to a standard studio rate once it sold.

And if you’re arguing for bonuses out of that 14M for the crew to bring their total pay up to a more standard rate, I’m all for it. But your first post was about the $300/day rate at the time it was made.

@CodenameFluffy @BrianMcquery @QTarantino_ Correct. Obviously can’t directly compare to a salary, but it’s the easiest way to illustrate that this was very reasonable pay for an indie. Even if only taking jobs at this rate and only working 8 months a year it would be over 70k for what is effectively her first job.

@jenna_payne @HeylKatme Yeah — $150 for an indie and $200 for something higher budget. Mayyyyybe $250 if you’re lucky. The “number of jobs” is not a thing. You get paid to show up and when you show up you do what needs to get done.

@battymamzelle They took an opportunity on a tiny project that they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Even with almost no prior experience, they got paid for a month at a rate equivalent to $108,000/yr. And that opportunity turned out to be a hit and is going to catapult their career forward.

@jenna_payne @HeylKatme Her rate was commensurate with her experience. In your scenario, if she was on the crew at all, she would have been an Art Department PA. That’s $150-200/day. But all of this is in a fictional world where this was a much higher budget production.

@Nicky_Bonez @Alex_Demise @EZE3D You have to also keep in mind that most films don’t make money like this — the only reason distributors can buy *any* films is because once in a while they get a smash hit. It makes continuing to invest in films worth it. You win some you lose some but you have to come out ahead.

@Nicky_Bonez @Alex_Demise @EZE3D No. That would be highly unusual. Why would a distributor ever make that deal? They’re paying 14M to own it outright. But when they buy it they also have no guarantee of ever turning a profit — it’s an investment and this one paid off (though many others do not).

@stoug23 @RuffCrim This point hasn’t been brought up enough tbh. If the budget for crew was higher (via upfront pay or backend or both) they would have hired someone more experienced. She never would have had the opportunity. No better way to fast track your career than crush something big early on

@pastelETH @KubricklynchYT IMO we have that already but a first time director wanted to make his passion project and did so with a tiny budget that he scraped together. Those projects don’t usually make money. But now his success will mean his next film is funded/promoted the usual way.

@pastelETH @KubricklynchYT The film was sold for 14M so 12M might be the profit after including development costs etc. 50% goes to investors 50% to filmmakers. 1% of the creative side split is $60,000. That’s $2,400 per person. I personally would bonus everyone 2-3x that, but these are the real numbers.

@DerlisAGonzalez Focus features have nothing to do with this conversation. They didn’t produce the film they don’t have any connection to the crew whatsoever. When you say the film made $200M you’re spreading a lie. The film made 14M.

@EZE3D The filmmakers sold the movie to a distributor for 14M. Everything after that is irrelevant. Also, 50% of that typically goes back to investors who funded the film (this is good — it gets films funded). Some bonuses would be fair IMO but no more than 100-200% of original pay.

@MowMoyai @DerlisAGonzalez @scannerbarkly Right! And the distributor pays to market the film! If they take half the box office and half of that was marketing, they’ve only made 30M profit on their 14M investment. Very good, but not what people would have you believe.
