...that don't get told, because there was not enough good luck to go around. A lot of people were not lucky enough to survive. A lot of people ended up mute in death. How do you tell that story? Actually, I think Maus does a great job.

This bothered me. Because of course all holocaust survival stories involve a litany of improbable good luck. Conditional on the source of a story surviving, the odds of that person having experienced a lot of lucky breaks is very high. But what is "a lot" is the number of stories

Someone commented yesterday about the string of improbable coincidences and strokes of luck that made Spiegelman's survival possible in the Maus story. And reflected that there were lots of holocaust stories like that.

@CoreyRobin @BreeNewsome I happen to have just read both volumes of Maus—because it was assigned in my son’s 9th grade English class (he loved it). And the board’s objections make no sense. They are gaslighting us when they say it’s not antisemitism or holocaust education suppression.

It will be difficult to find a book with less graphic sexual content than Maus, since there is essentially none in it. This is part of what leads one to doubt the sincerity of this pretext.

If we had ranked choice voting, we could ALSO have a nonpartisan primary to winnow the field in big races. Let the top five go to the general election. That should simplify things for voters.

Ideally, you would also want a voting system to feel easy for voters, but this seems to me like a less important problem, compared with whether the voting system produces perverse results (i.e. opposite voters' wishes).

Our tendency to have elections with a crowded field of contenders with similar policy preferences makes the dysfunction of our voting worse and the value of ranked choice even greater.

@FenitN @ChmnMendelson You asked what problem ranked choice voting is supposed to solve? The problem is that our current voting system does not always reflect the true preference of the voters.
