@wmp_gainey @CitImmCanada Hi @wmp_gainey Thank you, however I’m not sure I get what you mean by ‘direct renewal’. Sure the application will be via the right channels - online but this is an isolated situation and IRCC doc says PR renewal applicants should be ‘in Canada’ when applying hence the concern.

@CitImmCanada @CitImmCanada This question is since the PR is working for a Canadian company abroad, they might need to return overseas and will be in Canada for a short time. Hence it may be better to apply prior to going to Canada with the valid card, and then pick up the new card in Canada.
