A few pics of the Station Hotel during its refurb and renaming to Station East in 2016. Part of the much improved and thriving Railway Quarter in Gateshead. It was a funny little boozer, a much smaller public area than there is now they’ve opened up the arch and upstairs.
@neheritagelib Yeah, there’s some really good stuff happening in North Shields right now and it’s becoming a bit of a cultural hotspot. It definitely comes down to life being simpler and also not having constant info overload. Lots of theories about the ‘why’ but too much to write in a tweet.
@neheritagelib That being said, on a personal level I have great memories of working down there as a fishmonger when it was rundown, stinking, and rat infested. But overall, it’s a lot better for all now - times change. The place only used to be tidied up when the Fish Quay Festival was on.
@neheritagelib Yeah, I worded that badly. I meant Quayside and Ouseburn have never been better IMO. North Shields fish quay is going / has gone through what feels like a similar transformation.
@TyneSnapper Sounds similar to when I went for gigs Steve, it was like a rather damp and smelly front room with beige / white walls. I may have some photos kicking about somewhere.
Morden Tower, part of the old town wall. B&W image from the Newcastle Libraries pictured in 1920 and comparison shot from this weekend of how it looks now. There were gigs and events happening here every now and then but I’ve not heard of it being open for a good few years now.
@neheritagelib I agree though, there’s a difference between looking back with some nostalgia and remembering what was rather than saying everything was better.
@neheritagelib There’s probably a balance to be had, people will generally remember things being better when they were younger. At a local level, there’s no denying big swathes of Newcastle and areas such as the Quayside and Ouseburn are so much better than what they ended up like.
@OfficielKaybaye @TyneSnapper That’s a shame, it was an interesting spot for little gigs. Dodging the rats on your way to and from it wasn’t much fun though.
Warner Bros cinema at Manors was a decent place to watch a film. Not a patch on the main screen at the old Odeon but it felt flash given how new it was. Now the site of @NorthumbriaUni Business & Law building, the WB didn't last long (89-04) in the grand scheme of developments.

An advert for W.E Harker furniture shop 38-40 Grainger Street from of an old book of mine from the 20s. Found a corresponding picture online showing the same shop in 1967. Based on the posters in the window it seems they may have closed down not long after.

The old Salvation Army building on Westgate Rd looks in increasingly bad structural shape each time I pass it. The last main use was as an illegal cannabis farm if memory serves me right. Does anyone know if there are plans to fix it up or are we likely to see it on fire first?

@neheritagelib @TyneSnapper I hear you, it’s not like there’s a lot going up and down the Tyne now. For the Swing Bridge in particular I’d maybe argue it’s less about the modern day use case and more about maintaining an important piece of engineering history. The whole thing is looking a bit of a state.
The Swing Bridge uses a special reflective paint to combat thermal expansion. In hot weather its Victorian iron and steel expands, this narrowed the vital clearance gap and jammed the swing mechanism. Fire crews once hosed it down with cold water to shrink it back into action.
