PRFAA Executive Director Gabriella Boffelli joined Governor @Jenniffer González-Colón, Assistant Secretary Katie Jereza of @DOEelectricity, and @EPAregion2 Administrator Mike Martucci for a site visit to the San Juan Power Plant, where the Department of Energy is investing more than $33.6 million to repair and rehabilitate Units 7 and 9, which together provide 200 MW of baseload generation capacity. Strengthening Puerto Rico’s energy infrastructure remains a top priority to ensure a more reliable, resilient, and affordable electric system for the people of Puerto Rico.

En el encuentro estuvieron presentes miembros de la Junta de Supervisión y Administración Financiera para Puerto Rico; la directora ejecutiva de @PRFAA, Gabriella Boffelli; comisionados del Negociado de Energía; representantes de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental federal (EPA); directivos de @femaregion2; y el @ZardeEnergia, Ing. Josué A. Colón. Se dialogó sobre las iniciativas y el progreso de la reconstrucción del sistema eléctrico. También se evaluó el estado del Programa de Resiliencia Energética de Puerto Rico, las lecciones aprendidas y los efectos de las órdenes de emergencia 202-c emitidas por el DOE para acelerar proyectos. La reunión abordó la estrategia a largo plazo para estabilizar y optimizar la red eléctrica mediante la integración de energía estable, confiable y económica.

The operation of the power generation infrastructure is a priority for our Administration led by Governor @Jenniffer González Colón. For this reason, this afternoon the Energy Czar and Executive Director of the Public-Private Partnerships Authority, Josué A. Colón Ortiz, P.E., along with the Governor and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Electricity of the U.S. Department of Energy, Catherine 'Katie' Jereza, inspected the operation of Unit #7 at the San Juan Power Plant. As part of the visit, officials from the plant’s operator, @Genera_PR, provided an update on the work carried out at the facility. Also participating in the tour were the Regional Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Mike Martucci; the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, Gabriella Boffelli; and the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, Engineer Mary Carmen Zapata. The conversion of Unit #7, as well as that of Unit #9 to natural gas as the primary fuel was authorized, which will result in greater efficiency and savings. — La operación de la infraestructura de generación de energía es una prioridad para nuestra administración, liderada por la gobernadora Jenniffer González Colón, por tal razón, esta tarde el @ZardeEnergia y Director Ejecutivo de la Autoridad para las @AAPPPuertoRico, Ing. Joined by Assistant Secretary Katie Jereza of @DOEelectricity & @EPAregion2 Administrator Mike Martucci, we conducted a site visit at the San Juan Power Plant, where the Department of Energy is investing over $33.6 million to repair and rehabilitate Units 7 and 9, which collectively provide 200 MW of baseload generation capacity. We are also working with the @EPA on the necessary air permitting reviews to switch both units to operate on natural gas, which will both lower emissions and produce estimated annual savings of $50 million for customers. ——— Junto a Catherine “Katie” Jereza, secretaria auxiliar de la Oficina de Electricidad del Departamento de Energía de los Estados Unidos (DOE), y Mike Martucci, administrador regional de la Región Noreste y el Caribe de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (EPA), realizamos una visita a la Central San Juan, donde el Departamento de Energía está invirtiendo más de $33.6 millones para reparar y rehabilitar las Unidades 7 y 9, las cuales en conjunto aportan 200 MW de capacidad de generación base al sistema eléctrico. Además, estamos trabajando junto a la EPA en las revisiones necesarias de permisos de calidad de aire para convertir ambas unidades a operación con gas natural, lo que permitirá reducir emisiones y generar ahorros estimados de $50 millones anuales para los clientes.

Members of my administration and I visited the Cambalache Power Plant in Arecibo alongside Assistant Secretary Katie Jereza of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity (@DOEelectricity); Chief of Staff to the @EPA Administrator Eric Amidon; EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Jeffrey Hall; and @EPAregion2 Regional Administrator Mike Martucci. Hace apenas unos meses anunciamos aquí en Cambalache un proyecto histórico de 430 MW de almacenamiento de energía con tecnología Tesla Megapack. Hoy vemos que esos planes ya están en acción. Los trabajos ya comenzaron en varias de las instalaciones que formarán parte de esta iniciativa, incluyendo Cambalache, Vega Baja y Costa Sur. Este sistema de baterías permitirá almacenar energía, fortalecer la estabilidad de la red y reducir un 90% los eventos de relevo de carga. — Just a few months ago, we announced here in Cambalache a historic 430 MW energy storage project using Tesla Megapack technology. Today, we are seeing those plans become a reality. Work has already begun at several of the facilities that will be part of this initiative, including Cambalache, Vega Baja, and Costa Sur. This battery storage system will allow energy to be stored, strengthen grid stability, and reduce load-shedding events by 90%.

La Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos acaba de aprobar el S. 2, que asigna $70 mil millones en fondos para la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos (CBP) y el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de los Estados Unidos (ICE), dos agencias federales de cumplimiento de la ley de importancia crítica para Puerto Rico y el resto de la nación. Esta legislación garantizará que ambas agencias cuenten con financiamiento hasta el año 2029 para llevar a cabo su misión y mantener seguras a nuestras comunidades.

The U.S. House of Representatives just passed S. 2, the Secure America Act, providing $70 billion in funding to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), two critical federal law enforcement agencies for Puerto Rico and the rest of the nation. This legislation will ensure both agencies are funded through 2029 to carry out their mission and keep our communities safe.

With support from funding allocated by the U.S. Department of Energy (@ENERGY), $21.2 million is being invested to repair and strengthen Units 2 and 3 at the Cambalache Power Plant. Repairs to Unit 3 (80 MW) were completed in March, while repairs to Unit 2 are expected to be completed by December. — Con el apoyo de fondos asignados por el DOE, se están invirtiendo $21.2 millones para reparar y fortalecer las Unidades 2 y 3 de Cambalache. La reparación de la Unidad 3 (80 MW) se completó en marzo, mientras que las reparaciones en la Unidad 2 deben estar completadas para diciembre.
