The ruling class during Mao’s time, the working class, enjoyed comprehensive and glorious welfare. The ‘Iron Rice Bowl’ meant that workers in China would have lifetime job security, guaranteed work, regular wages, guaranteed housing, extensive and comprehensive access to low cost or free healthcare, fully paid maternity and paternity leave, all expense-paid holidays to resorts and broad pension plans as well as other end of work benefits. This is just to list a few of the incredible collection of rights, guarantees and benefits Chinese workers enjoyed during Mao’s time. Deng Xiaoping and his rightist cronies would later scrap this in its entirety. An estimated 30 million workers were laid off between just the 1990s and early 2000s, after accelerating the complete demise of the ‘Iron Rice Bowl’ with the notorious “Xiagang” policy.
