Hopefully we will see more court time for Mayen and Noa but how does JR manage the minutes in the front court too? How much will we see Jesse on the floor this season? Or do the young forwards Gerovich and Huefner get the minutes?
Windler 0-5 from 3 in G2. Don’t expect that to happen again and there will be an adjustment on his usage with Jones now in the line-up. Important though that he remains in attack mode as defences will load up on Jones.
Other thoughts from yesterday’s Wildcats/Golden Kings match:
A lot of talk and angst about our import PG situation but just quietly JLA going to be huge for the Cats. Not used to seeing such a big and dominant target in the paint for us for a long time.
Final thought on @masonjones2 - Not sure if he knows Empire of the Sun is a co-anchored by a Perth lad, but being one of his fav bands maybe is a sign that he was meant to be here. If he keeps playing like this expect to hear “Walking on a Dream” as all season long.
His potential options will be Windler, Henshall and Pepper on the perimeter, or JLA around the rim. If KD can hit the three at an decent clip then the spacing will be even more insane.
I’d be curious to see if he goes to the low block and try to seal or post up, especially on smaller guards. He has the size to be able to operate. If he can score on the low block, look to see how he passes out of the inevitable double teams that will come his way.
Mason Jones is a different beast to BC but I suspect defences will try to the same tactics at first to see how he and the team responds – that is blitzing the PG and forcing him to pass off.
-Was very vocal on court to his teammates calling out coverages and for the ball. But lots of positive energy and definitely looks like his going to play to the crowd. He will enjoy the bright lights and noise of the Perth Arena. The Red Army seems more than happy to reciprocate.
-Was able to split doubles off the dribble and looked unhurried on the dribble and through the shot release. The degree of difficulty on his first shot was high but he did not look forced.
Some observations from observing Mason Jones from courtside yesterday:
-He’s a big guard, not just at 6-4 but also his frame, which hopefully can absorb the physical defence he is going to encounter this season. Upon seeing him in the flesh I thought: Ooh, he looks like Iso Joe!
@MickRandallHS This is a good balanced line-up. If Jones has even half the defensive chops as his offence it will allow Henshall to start at the two. Windler can defend 1-4, Doolitte 1-5, and then JLA in the paint. Off the bench you have Pepper, Lat, and Dech. Okwera to swing 4-5 with Noa.
