Today, our nation honored a true American hero, Major James Capers Jr., with the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery during the Vietnam War. Major Capers is a trailblazer in Marine Corps history, recognized as one of the first Black Marines to serve in elite Force Reconnaissance units and rise to positions of leadership during a time when opportunities were often limited by discrimination. Yet he never let obstacles define him. Instead, he led with courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow Marines. In 1967, while leading a dangerous reconnaissance mission deep in enemy territory, Major Capers was severely wounded multiple times. Despite his injuries, he continued to lead, protect his team, and fight to ensure every Marine under his command survived. His actions reflected the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment. For decades, fellow Marines, veterans, and lawmakers worked to ensure his heroism received the recognition it deserved. Today, that effort culminated with the presentation of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for valor. Major James Capers Jr.'s legacy is not only one of battlefield heroism but also of perseverance, leadership, and breaking barriers for future generations. His story reminds us that true greatness is measured by service to others, sacrifice in the face of danger, and the courage to lead when it matters most. Congratulations, Major Capers.
