𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻? Today in Torrance at WRD’s groundbreaking for the Brackish Groundwater Reclamation Program and Torrance Groundwater Desalter Expansion Project. Today’s conversations focused on brackish groundwater desalination and the role it can play in Southern California’s water future. This is groundwater located inland that contains high salt levels, treated through advanced technology and added back into the water supply. Projects like this are important because they help create more resilient local water supplies while using less energy than traditional ocean desalination. WRD’s expansion effort is set to double its desalination capacity and represents another important step toward strengthening water reliability for Southern California. This is the kind of innovation and investment that helps build long-term water resiliency for our communities.

Another major milestone for the Delta Conveyance Project. Federal agencies have now completed the Endangered Species Act process for construction activities, moving this critical infrastructure project one step closer to reality. The Delta Conveyance Project is about protecting California’s water future, modernizing aging infrastructure, and improving reliability for millions of Californians in the face of climate change and seismic risk. Funny how the project keeps clearing hurdle after hurdle despite the endless noise from opponents determined to stop progress at every turn. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻? This week in Carlsbad for a truly historic day at the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant. Federal, state, and local water leaders came together for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding focused on exploring new opportunities for interstate water exchanges along the Colorado River. This kind of collaboration and creativity is exactly where the water community can make a difference. The agreement opens the door for agencies across California, Nevada, and Arizona to explore partnerships on desalination, recycled water, and other innovative supply projects that could benefit the entire region. These are the kinds of conversations and partnerships that will help shape a more reliable and sustainable water future for the Southwest.

From Delta Conveyance to water recycling and beyond, this series was created to make California water issues more engaging, accessible, and understandable for everyone. Charley had the opportunity to speak with more than 500 attendees about the future of water projects, what they mean for working families, and why involvement matters. The conversation went beyond bids and construction. It focused on how people can engage in the decision-making process surrounding projects, legislation, and regulatory reform. Educating and advocating helps public officials make informed decisions, and strong participation is a critical part of moving important work forward. Water infrastructure is about more than pipes and projects. It’s about people, jobs, reliability, and the future of California.
