the other thing is; you can tell if someone loves a thing if they're willing to put aside the time to research and study it lol, you don't just DO that unless there's a part of you that REALLY wants to dive into it, and that only comes with love (...unless you're in academia)

@dani_setsuna you can make a sort of equivalent connection to viewing notes on a piano roll; in sheet music you can usually make out the basic contour of a melody even if you're not proficient enough to read the individual notes - that will end up coming with time and experience.

@dani_setsuna when you place down notes on notation software you 'hear' the pitch played back, and from there I started slowly building the connections. when you stack chords you see how intervals like thirds and fourths 'look' on the page and suddenly chord voicings make a lot of sense-

it makes me super happy that a lot of younger composers have started their journeys on DAWs and often without really any formal training on an instrument, but I seriously believe that there'll be a point where you SHOULD be teaching yourself how to read /and write/ scores.

@je9pa9aoqkjwjd with composing, I basically lay out the foundational mockup in a DAW and then re-transcribe it onto score so that I can make edits on the score-side to make them a bit more idiomatic to actual scoring conventions. sample libraries like to obfuscate the actual mechanics a LOT

@je9pa9aoqkjwjd whenever I arranged music during school I would work entirely in notation software without even touching a DAW so that I could make edits on the fly depending on how the band or ensemble took it. making them separate workflows also helps you understand the music a bit better imo
