Today I visited Auschwitz with my children. I’m not going to provide my personal reflections here; they are too personal and the experience too fresh and you must visit and form your own. But on the way back, I began to think about our post-October 7 world and current attempts by the international community to impose a two-state solution over the heads of the Israelis. The Israeli diplomat Abba Eban famously called the pre-1967 borders (excluding the West Bank, Golan Heights and Gaza) the “Auschwitz lines”, as they left Israel vulnerable to destruction. In the light of the Hamas atrocities, this rings especially true. In my @telegraph essay today, I explored the topic in some depth. Here’s an extract (link to the full piece at the end): ‘From the cradle to the grave, Palestinian society is coursing with indoctrination. The polls may not be entirely reliable, but they show widespread support for Hamas and the October 7 atrocities both in Gaza and on the West Bank. ‘Schools, including those run by the United Nations, have Israelophobia baked into the syllabus. In Gaza, half the population was born under Hamas rule and came of age steeped in its ideology; on the West Bank, the authorities offer financial rewards to the families of convicted terrorists. ‘The international community insists that new Palestinian leadership is required, and this is undeniable. But where are these leaders-in-waiting? Anyone with any support has either blood on their hands or other people’s money in their pockets, or both. ‘This may not conform to the type of reality the international community would like. It may not conform to neocolonialist visions of the noble savage. But it is the truth of the matter. Unilaterally recognising a Palestinian state, as Lord Cameron has suggested, or “imposing it” upon Israel, as Josep Borrell has proposed, will do nothing to remedy this problem. In fact, emboldening the extremists will only make it worse. ‘Trumpeting support for the two-state solution, of course, is a way of winning dominance as the most fair-minded person in the room. ‘But while we may have the liberty to indulge such luxury beliefs, Israelis must worry about the lives of their children. Take the West Bank, the heart of a future Palestinian state. It includes a strategically significant mountain range within easy missile range of the narrowest segment of Israel. ‘Known as the “Hadera-Gadera rectangle”, this Israeli heartland is just nine miles wide and 60 miles long but home to half of its population and much of its vital infrastructure, including Tel Aviv. ‘An invasion from a new state of Palestine would be catastrophic and threaten to split the country in two. Ignoring the widespread presence of radicalism on the Palestinian side is a luxury Israelis can hardly afford when asked to give up control of the strategically perilous West Bank. ‘A new state could be demilitarised. But what if its future police force sought to bolster its capabilities with armoured cars, night vision equipment and heavy weaponry? What if the Iranians turned the new country into a redoubt of fanaticism, infesting it with terror cells armed with rockets, suicide bombs, mortars and automatic weapons, as happened in Gaza? Would the international community support an Israeli invasion to neutralise this threat, or would it be hauled before the ICJ? ‘It takes a special type of sophistication to dull such sharp realities. Does the international community really believe that a new state of Palestine would miraculously become the only democracy among the 22 autocracies of the Arab world? That the Palestinians would leave their corruption and Israelophobia at the door? That such a development would end the cycle of bloodshed? I would never say something like this, because of how insensitive and callous it may appear to people that only get their information from the media or social media without the vaguest understanding of urban warfare. War is devastating, if this is a just war (as I believe it truly is) then how we conduct ourselves is setting a global standard with an “astonishingly low ratio for modern urban warfare” @aroberts_andrew literally wrote the book on conflict (google it), therefore his statement is so important. If you ask Israel not to defend itself in the aftermath of Hamas’ attack, the only alternative you’re suggesting is surrendering to a heinous regime that has promised to repeat October 7. We have no intention whatsoever to do so, therefore we fight, therefore I’m back in uniform after 7 years of retirement (over those years I’ve been critical of the government and the IDF). In this war we pay a price with the blood of soldiers, and the people of Gaza are paying the dearest price of all because of how Hamas has weaponized the civilian arena to try and protect themselves at the expense of the people. The civilian cost of war is the direct result of Hamas launching a war they could never win, it is the direct result of Hamas not unconditionally surrendering, it is the direct result of Hamas not releasing 136 hostages.

⁦@aroberts_andrew⁩ Lord Roberts of Belgravia importantly stresses that the 2:1 civilian to combatant casualty ratio in an urban conflict such as in Gaza is a difficult accomplishment for any army, and commends the IDF the efforts it takes to limit civilian casualty.

Speaking in London about the reaction of some in the West he says: “I can’t get over how ignorant these people are. When they say ‘Free Palestine’ do they understand that Hamas is a dictatorship that took Gaza by force? That they killed 160 Fatah members? That they force people to follow Sharia law? “It is so ridiculous that it makes me angry. And it has changed something in the Israeli perception. “I don’t like that civilians are being killed in Gaza. Hamas has created this Catch 22 situation – they attack from inside populated areas knowing that there will be a retaliation. And they hide in tunnels which they don’t allow civilians into – they are only for Hamas. And yet people are marching for Hamas. “Now we realise that no matter what happens, even if Hamas slaughters thousands of Israelis, these people, these ‘good’ people, don’t care.
