Community & Social Context is a #SDOH due to the way it encompasses a patient’s day-to-day life. It includes the way community members are treated because of their identities and the support (or lack thereof) within the community.
Food defines many people, and as such is a big #SDOH. Approaching issues relating to food insecurity by judging patients or proposing unrealistic solutions is unhelpful at best and stigmatizing at worst.
Across our platforms, you’ll hear us often mention the social determinants of health or #SDoH, but what are they? We want to explore that with you! A THREAD:

As providers, we must always acknowledge the experiences of our patients. What may seem like a “noncompliant” or “no-show” patient may really just be a patient traumatized by past providers.
The barriers to care occur for many reasons. Social issues such as racism and discrimination are some of the biggest determinants of mental health status because patients can be stereotyped and profiled by health providers, leading to a mistrust in services.
July is #MinorityMentalHealthMonth so naturally we’d like to shed some light on some of the vulnerable populations that we need to serve more intentionally.

The #UrbanServiceTalks team finds such value in being real with the communities we serve and the reality is, in many ways, the LGBTQ+ community is being failed. We are lifelong learners and as such we will continue learn and grow as future clinicians serving all communities.
Health profession education curricula oftentimes do not focus enough time on care for LGBTQ+ patients, dismantling unintended biases, or the utilization of non stigmatizing language.
#Pride represents the antithesis of stigma. It is about the promotion of equity, dignity, and increased visibility and affirmation of the LGBTQ+ community as a social group. However, the medical field has been failing LGBTQ+ people for too long.
