Virgil's Aeneid is all about music. It's all about songs. Following Pythagoras, and against Plato, Virgil is instructing in moral virtue and showing moral liability through the songs of the various characters: Aeneas, Dido, and Turnus. Music is the world, it also instructs.

Reading Purgatorio and the notes for Canto XXXIII mention that there was a custom that a murderer could protect themselves from vengence by eating soup over the victim's grave for nine days, thus in 13th century Florence people would stand guard over murder victim graves.

All right, I think some replies are misconstruing my meaning. The sheriff is *not* the good guy. Every decision he makes is terrible and catastrophic. To quote Tellyrand: “It was worse than a crime; it was a blunder.” The sheriff only does one thing right: accurately assess John Rambo as a problem for his town. He simply needed to show Rambo some dignity and mild compassion and Rambo would not have been a problem *that day*. Buy John a sandwich, say “thank you for your service,” and drive him to the next town. But Rambo in this film is indeed a powder keg. He is a wounded wolf. He didn’t need to be set off that day…but he was going to go off eventually.

Just watched First Blood for the first time and clearly the sheriff is way too harsh and punitive but he was absolutely right that John Rambo was going to be a (massive) problem for his community
