You can vehemently disagree with Palestine Action activists goals, whilst simultaneously be horrified a judge can decide AFTER a conviction if it was terrorism related amd double a sentence. Being able to class an offense as terrorism AFTER conviction without charging them with terrorism should bother everyone. Any protest action that is now determined as trying to "change government policy" can have this applied. So today it's Palestine Action, but next it'll be immigration protests, farmers protests, NHS, tax etc etc.

She fled her home. She saved her nurse’s uniform. Not her jewellery. Not possessions. Her uniform because she wanted to keep caring for people. That tells you everything about her. This is the Britain I believe in: one that values compassion, courage and those who contribute to our communities.

Judge Johnson’s rogue manoeuvrings in the rigged trials of the Palestine Action activists have so incensed the legal profession that thousands signed a petition demanding that he take the chance last Monday to recuse himself from the sentencing hearing. He, of course, refused to do so. They call his behaviour during the trial “biased” and “discriminatory conduct” and have referred him to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office. Here is David Whyte, professor of law at Queen Mary’s University of London, who handed the petition to the JCIO, explaining another reason why so many legal professionals are outraged by Judge Johnson’s actions: He has shown exceptional “cruelty and vindictiveness” in holding the activists in remand for more than three times the normal maximums, even when the prosecution was not asking for them to be remanded, and for refusing them bail between their convictions and sentencing. The Court of Appeal is due to issue a ruling on the government’s appeal against an earlier High Court decision declaring Palestine Action’s proscription unlawful this coming Monday, days after Judge Johnson’s sentencing of the Filton activists. If this is all starting to look like theatre, that it because it is. In dictatorships, these are called show trials. Everyone understands that the outcome is predetermined. Everyone understands that justice is non-existent. The verdict is entirely political. It is a faux-legal rationalisation of what the security state wants. Judge Johnson is the perfect judge to play that part. The courts will do exactly what is expected of them unless they are worried that public revulsion will discredit their decision. Netanyahu asks Lebanese if they remember the days when Lebanon was called the “Pearl of the Middle East.” We do. We also remember who invaded Lebanon in 1982, besieged Beirut, occupied the south for nearly two decades, bombed our cities, carried out massacres, assassinations & repeated wars. Interesting how Hezbollah is blamed for everything, including Lebanon’s decline, while the Israeli invasion, occupation & destruction that predated Hezbollah’s very existence are simply erased from the story. Hezbollah did not invade Lebanon. Israel did. Hezbollah did not create the occupation. Hezbollah emerged because of it. You also speak as though Hezbollah is not Lebanese. Whether one supports it or opposes it, Hezbollah represents a significant segment of Lebanese society. It has MPs in parliament, ministers in government, & a constituency that cannot simply be wished out of existence. Millions of Lebanese cannot be erased because that makes for a more convenient Israeli political narrative. The arrogance of telling Lebanese to “free themselves” from other Lebanese while Israeli forces occupy Lebanese territory & Israeli aircraft violate Lebanese airspace daily is difficult to miss. You speak as though Lebanon’s problems began with Hezbollah & Iran. That is historically illiterate at best & deliberately dishonest at worst. Lebanon has suffered from corruption, sectarianism, foreign intervention & political failure. But it has also endured repeated Israeli invasions, occupations, bombardments, assassinations & wars long before Hezbollah became a major force. And now the man whose military has spent months bombing Lebanese towns, flattening homes, killing civilians, displacing entire communities & threatening the country with “another Gaza” wants to present himself as a concerned friend of the Lebanese people. The audacity is staggering. It would be impressive were it not so grotesque. The historical revisionism is even worse. You must be getting desperate if this is the story you are trying to sell.
