Farm security is national security! 🇺🇸 As @POTUS has made clear, America must never be dependent on foreign nations for the inputs that feed our country. For too long, we offshored critical manufacturing—including key agricultural inputs like fertilizer. That is why we are investing billions to onshore fertilizer production back to the United States. I’ll soon be in Louisiana breaking ground on what will be the largest ammonia and fertilizer facility in the world, alongside more than 90 other projects already underway. America’s food supply is safe, and the @USDA is taking swift, aggressive action to eradicate New World screwworm. This is a pest the United States successfully eradicated in the 1960s through coordinated science and sterile fly technology. Under the previous administration, New World screwworm began to re-emerge and move north through the Darien Gap as millions of people traveled towards the southern border. By 2023, screwworm was present in Mexico. It was shocking when I came into office in February of last year to learn the last administration had just five full-time staff working on screwworm. As of last Wednesday, when our first New World screwworm case was confirmed, USDA had over 100 staff working on preparedness and response—a team we built over the last 14 months in anticipation of this moment. This in addition to the $1.3 billion committed and invested for new infrastructure and sterile fly facilities, the first opening later this month. We have rapidly scaled up our response: expanding surveillance across high-risk corridors, strengthening coordination with state agriculture officials and international partners, and accelerating deployment of proven sterile fly operations that were used successfully to push this pest out of the United States in the 1960s and all the way to South America by the 1980s. Today, alongside @GregAbbott_TX, Admiral Schmoyer, Under Secretary Hutchins, John Bellinger, and South Texas ranchers — we saw firsthand the cutting-edge research battling New World Screwworm every single day. We toured the @USDA_ARS Knipling-Bushland Livestock Insects Research Lab, then received a critical briefing on the current situation and our aggressive whole-of-government response in close partnership with Texas. At the joint press conference, we delivered a clear message to Texas producers and rural America: we are in full combat mode. Major Actions Underway: • Massive sterile fly deployment targeting the current affected area: 4 million by air + 4 million on the ground weekly inside the 20km zone — with an additional 90+ million across the broader response area • Unified Incident Command with the Texas Animal Health Commission (@TAHC) and strict 20km movement controls in the infected zone • Expanded border trapping, wildlife surveillance, and direct producer outreach to contain and eradicate the threat • Accelerated sterile fly production at new facilities to overwhelm and defeat the pest We opened the Moore Air Base dispersal facility, are fast-tracking a new Texas production facility at record speed, will bring a new production facility online in Mexico next month, launched the $100M Grand Challenge, and secured new response tools.
