Granting legal personhood to AI agents, as discussed in the Financial Times article, could become a serious societal and economic risk if it is not accompanied by a trusted identity and accountability framework such as WiseID. The fundamental problem is that AI systems today can make decisions, execute transactions, negotiate contracts, manage assets, and interact autonomously with other systems, yet they generally lack a verifiable digital identity. Without a trusted identity layer, an AI agent could effectively operate as a legal actor without a clear, cryptographically verifiable link to its creator, owner, operator, or beneficiary. This creates a dangerous situation in which responsibility becomes blurred or impossible to establish. Unlike humans or traditional corporations, AI agents can be replicated instantly, modified remotely, deployed across multiple jurisdictions, and operate continuously at machine speed. If such agents were granted legal rights without strong identity controls, they could become the digital equivalent of anonymous shell companies, capable of conducting economic activities while evading accountability. Questions such as who is responsible for a fraudulent transaction, a market manipulation scheme, a cybersecurity incident, or a regulatory violation could become extremely difficult to answer. The challenge becomes even greater when AI agents are combined with cryptocurrencies, smart contracts, decentralized finance, and autonomous payment systems. An AI entity could theoretically control financial resources, enter agreements, and coordinate activities without direct human intervention. Without trusted identification and governance mechanisms, regulators, businesses, and citizens would have little visibility into who ultimately controls or benefits from those activities. This is where Agentic AI technologies such as WiseID become essential. By providing every AI agent with a unique cryptographic identity, hardware-rooted credentials, post-quantum security, immutable audit trails, and a verified chain of ownership and responsibility, WiseID transforms an anonymous software process into a trusted and accountable digital actor. Every significant action can be authenticated, traced, and linked to responsible individuals or organizations. Compliance policies, legal restrictions, and ethical rules can also be enforced before the agent is allowed to act.
