2024, we (at omi) were struggling with how to attract talented contributors who are 10/10 on speed and quality in pull requests (PRs) that help the product. we used a bug bounty system: money, the sweet spot. PRs get merged, then you get paid. solving real user pain points, as described in the issue spec, is what matters. not lines of code.

2018, we (at lozi) all agreed on using Pair structure: small groups of tech team focus on one product/company metric. their performance reviews (once a year) were mostly based on that metric. it was not, and never was, based on lines of code. the outcome the impact of that code are what matter :)

i saw so many contributors somehow think they are helping, but forget what the bar for open source actually is. 4/10? no, it is not. some guys do not even know what testing is or how to make sure their PR works as expected using proper testing techniques (tests == unit tests? wtf). with/without ai.

Open source maintainers that do review changes, give feedback and merge some: they are doing a service that goes well beyond what open source is. I see no problem them being more selective who to offer this for free, or even charge in other cases, or close this off for many
