Not entirely correct. The Dutch anthem starts: "William of Nassau am I, of German descent; True to the fatherland I remain until death. Prince of Orange am I, free and fearless. To the King of Spain I have always given honour." It's saying that William I, Prince of Orange has German descent, and that's correct, he was born in (what is modern day) Germany but he is seen as the father of the Dutch nation. That said, for a long time the Dutch didn't really see themselves as completely distinct from Germans. They called their language "Nederduits" (Nether-German) or "Diets" which is the Dutch cognate of the German word "Deutsch". Same on the German side. As late as the 1800s the Bavarian King Ludwig I added Dutchmen to his Walhalla Museum because he considered Dutch to be a dialect of German.
Voetsek (of voertsek) kom van die uitdrukking "(gaan) voort sê ek". Dit het deesdae nog verder afgeslyt na "tsek" (meestal onder nie-blankes). Die Nederlands is "voort seg ik". Uit die Duitse vertaling van Macbeth is die bekende sin "Fort, verdammter Fleck, fort, sag ich".

Funnily enough, such a consonant shift from "th" to "d" happened in Dutch and German between the 10th and 12th centuries. So for example Old Dutch changed from "thing" to "ding" and from "that" to "dat".
The only thatched roof home in Utah is a Cape Dutch style gatehouse built in 1994 with a reed roof. Renovated in 2009.
My 7yo daughter tells us to "chill down" and though I've explained to her multiple times that it's "chill out", she doesn't believe me. Now it's reached the point where my wife and I also say "chill down" to one another.
@LegosArchive Yes, in some ways English has more archaic words than other Germanic languages. And because English had split off sooner, words often underwent more semantic shift than in the continental Germanic languages. There are also older texts in old English than in old Dutch.
Die Engelse "wort" en ons woord "wortel" is verwant aan mekaar. Albei stam van Oergermaans *wurtiz wat "plant", "wortel" of "kruid" beteken.
STOP saying “plant” or “vegetable.” Those are from Latin. The native English word is “wort.”
@BenhuraT That's one way of looking at a function, but I'm not even sure it's the most common one. Generally (and mathematically) speaking it's a transformation of input into output.
This is cool and a healthy expression of pride in one's language, but a more practical approach would be to translate open source software into Zulu. For example, the entire Linux operating system (such as Ubuntu) can be translated into Zulu, so you can use your computer fully in your own language. Currently it looks like there's no-one adding any Zulu translations for Ubuntu. translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/stonkin… I also wonder why @Father_Of_Geeks chose "sebenza", which means "work" for "def" which is short for "definition".

@stardustsignal I'm not a Zulu, I'm Afrikaans and I have translated software into Afrikaans. This is a job for Zulu patriots.
@LegosArchive Yes! It's fun to find an old Germanic-sounding English word and looking for cognates in other Germanic languages.
@PhilippeFlops Afrikaans has some advantages over Zulu when it comes to creating academic terms. It can loan words from Dutch, is closely related to English (so it's sometimes easier to create translations) and you can also easily create words from Latin and Greek as you do in English.
@FunWithPrimus You can take an existing open-source LLM and fine-tune it with Zulu content. I'm planning on doing this with Afrikaans in the coming months.
@PhilippeFlops The University of Zululand offers BA degrees in Zulu. It's not as well developed as English and Afrikaans but there are people developing it further and as a language nerd I would love the opportunity to create new words for technical or academic jargon. You can just do things.
If I never again see the Paton quote "cry the beloved country" in a social media post for the rest of my life I would still have seen it too many times.
