@UKRinIRL @rtenews @jackiefox_ @rte Definitely *not* shocked. The general quality of production on RTE News is stupefyingly poor. Regular mistakes, wrong videos played, dropped lines. Once they claimed N Korea had a "nuclear missile" - long before N Korea had any such thing. They meant they had a nuclear "bomb".

@OlaLN @DubCityCouncil They're institutionally incapable of managing this city to the minimum of standards (functionally & aesthetically) citizens expect. They think are capable - just look at their "strategy & vision" documents. But they're not - just look at the *actual* city.

Of course, I expect the web team at MET.ie knows all this. As in many such instances, they're probably given little room for manoeuvre. Most likely the word came from on-high ... "Fill the homepage with words. Lots of words." It's a shame. There are better ways.

Also, not *everything* needs to be on the homepage. Homepages are simply not built for this type of content - and it shows in this example. Yes, start the journey there (and elsewhere), but don't cram it all in. It doesn't work and it doesn't help. blog.diffily.com/2017/02/a-home…

In this case, a mix of the Algorithmic, Instructional and Descriptive forms of content would work quite well. They would make it easier for users to find their location (A-Z? Map?), see a description of the impact and find out what to do/not to do. blog.diffily.com/2024/09/8-form…

It's a shame, because just a little more effort would make a BIG difference. It would mean people wouldn't have to read and reread the page several times to figure out what the heck is going on. They'd understand it first time. One might think that's important in an emergency?

Although they may believe they are helping, Met Éireann are actually passing most of the work of figuring things onto users. The institution is saying "Look, we've done our bit. We've put up lots and lots of information. If users can't figure it out - well, that's down to them."

Currently, the homepage repeats the same lengthy text over-and-over according to some structure that may make sense to Met Éireann (chronological?), but is certainly not clear for users. This is typical of institutions with poor digital literacy.

As storm Éowyn is here, it's a pity that Content Design for emergency comms on the MET.ie homepage falls so short. The density of information makes it quite hard for users to do a basic task, i.e. find a locality and read a warning. @MetEireann #ContentDesign
