I'd say Reno and Las Vegas are different in a lot of practical ways. Reno has a different climate, it's smaller, and the pace of life is a bit slower. Culturally, though, I think they're more similar than different. One thing that always rubbed me the wrong way growing up in Nevada was a certain attitude that I encountered pretty frequently. There was this sense that Nevada was somehow more enlightened or freer than everywhere else because of gambling, drinking, and generally relaxed laws. It often came with a dismissive attitude toward other states and sometimes even toward the tourists whose spending keeps much of the state's economy running. I've even poked fun at this subject in my stand-up comedy routine, as I've been guilty of doing it myself. Obviously not everyone is like that, but it was common enough that I noticed it. Nevada can also be a very individualistic place. There's a strong emphasis on self-reliance, hustling, and making your own success. That can be a positive trait, but I think it can also make people less sympathetic toward those who are struggling. The attitude can become, "if you didn't make it, that's your problem." That's probably one of the biggest cultural similarities I see between Reno and Las Vegas. Not everyone shares that mindset, but it's something I experienced in both places.

I think it's funny because I actually hate the city of Las Vegas. It was a terrible place to grow up in and live. LVFC is doing a fantastic job of rewriting the trauma and pain I felt every day living there most of my life. I would never want to move back there, even though I have a huge support network now that I didn't used to have. I also like people visiting, but do not recommend moving there willingly.
