You know @elonmusk, I really feel sorry for you and your family to have been infected by a mind virus. But the best defense against a mind virus is intelligence, knowledge, and science. Fighting a mind virus by promoting other mental pathogens, like Trumpism, conspiracy theories, and attacks on science and the media, is not a good idea. This is like trying to cure diabetes by spreading ebola: it will certainly stop your diabetes, but not without killing you. The cure against mind viruses is the expansion knowledge through science, and the dissemination of reliable information. Disinformation causes mind viruses to spread. Distrust in decent media outlets causes mind viruses to spread. Distrust in science and scientists cause mind viruses to spread. The political movements you are currently supporting are squarely on the wrong side of history here.

May I brag a minute? In 5th I set a state record by reading 203 books in my school read-a-thon. If only I had known then that reading is a clandestine tool of white supremacy, as I learned today on this platform from someone who apparently does not want minorities to succeed.

Here is a good example of being actively targeted in the last two weeks by @PubPeer for a paper my lab published in 1998. The concern was just raised in 2024 but then PubPeer took down the link. This is not appropriate and also the journal @oncogenejournal is giving a deadline of 2 weeks to respond. There is no "Peer" in "PubPeer" and the selective targeting of scientists for what maybe a political agenda some of which is public raises concerns. PubPeer insinuates things that are damaging the reputation of scientists such as fraud, misconduct, data manipulation, lack of integrity and they do it publicly and anonymously. They go further by piling on concerns with no attention to whether the concerns have merit, whether they have any impact on results, whether the concerns are legitimate. They are doing this in an anonymous way seemingly with no accountability for the damage they are causing. They are targeting who they wish to target. There is no statute of limitations apparently. Any response that questions their authority or motives is met with "why don't you just respond to concerns" or "your response raises red flags." They do not take into account the passage of time, the movement of labs to different institutions, the movement of researchers including out of science altogether, or the need for time, effort, and money to properly address any concerns. Journals and publishers have not weighed in on statute of limitations, changes in how the field views data in 2024 vs 1998, or the process by which PubPeer conducts itself. What PubPeer is doing, in my opinion, defines academic terrorism, blackmail, defamation, and lack of due process and this is done by an anonymous mob that is unregulated. @Nature @MicrobiomDigest @oracknows @NIH @NIHDirector @theNCI @P_J_Buckhaults @DrJBhattacharya @HHS_ORI @theNAMedicine @ScienceMagazine

The “America just got tossed into the abyss” narrative seems to assign very little agency to actual Americans who really do get to decide whether the abyss looks more inviting than the non-abyss. Certainly there is a pro-abyss contingent, just look for anyone trying to use the assassination attempt of Donald Trump to further turn the temperature up. The abyss is good for some people. There are also people who can be drawn into the pro-abyss faction by fear and frustration. But I think the abyss is both undesirable and pretty avoidable. Also, pitching the abyss as inevitable feels like a pro-abyss talking point. This has been my New York Times Op Ed for the day and “abyss” no longer sounds like a real word to me. Abysss. I am still having trouble coming to terms with the fact that a substantial number of Americans think government censorship is a good thing, akshually. Did they read Fahrenheit 451 and somehow think the firemen were the good guys?
