NFL 2K5 was a $19.99, fully complete football game with tightly integrated ESPN presentation that forced EA slash the cost of it's prestige-priced $49.99 Madden by $20 to try and stall 2K's rising momentum after 3 months. The market had already decided what the better game was.

@Old408 @BuckU_TV @LFGSD_23 I will say the ones where they weren't trying to out-sim The Show were not bad at all (The Bigs, MLB Power Pros). The gameplay in the mainline 2K games were always innovative but always lacked polish every year

@FendlerTweets @hitstickmaster2 So by NFL 2K5 the following year, the league had already seen the presentation problem: ESPN could sell its own interpretation of a licensed NFL product. A $19.99 game w/ tight ESPN presentation didn’t create that fear but made exclusivity look like the obvious next step

@FendlerTweets @hitstickmaster2 So Playmakers made the lesson from AGS impossible to ignore. This wasn’t Hollywood but it was ESPN, an NFL partner, airing a hit drama about pro football’s ugly side. If a *partner* could profit from an alternate football image, the NFL clearly had a control problem.
