A weak government looks for excuses. Using agencies like ED and CBI to instill fear is easy amongst your own citizens. Showing courage when citizens are harmed is what truly tests leadership.

India's economy is genuinely in trouble. But this piece gets both the diagnosis and the cure wrong. Look at how it keeps score: money flowing in, the currency, stock-market rankings, how much foreign investors pulled out. That measures whether capital is comfortable, not whether the country can make things. By that scoreboard a place that produces nothing but keeps investors happy looks like a winner. The question is set up wrong from the first line. The cure it prescribes, lower taxes, fewer rules, woo capital harder, is the exact medicine India has swallowed for a decade, and the article's own evidence is the record of it failing. India chased Tesla, paid Apple to assemble iPhones, and treated investment inflows as a national scoreboard, and got a few assembly lines with little capability behind them. Telling a patient to double the dose that made him sick is odd advice. The protections it scolds, local courts before arbitration, capital-gains tax, a higher bar on imports, are ordinary tools for a country that wants to keep its own tax and regulatory powers and build its industry. India's real error was who it sheltered: Tata, Reliance, Adani, the incumbents who needed it least, while the protection never went toward forcing real competition. Wooing capital and building industry are two different jobs, and India keeps mistaking the first for the second. The weak rupee and the thin investment are symptoms. If you've adopted AI at your company but haven't seen any tangible results, read this 1990 article: "The Dynamo and the Computer" by Paul David. When electricity first arrived, factories that "adopted" it barely got faster. They just swapped the steam engine for an electric one and ran everything else exactly as before: same machine layout, same workflow, same management. Electricity in, no real gains out. The most common mistake with any new technology is to drop it into the old organization and then declare the transformation done. The real leap came decades later, when each machine got its own small motor. Suddenly machines no longer had to be lined up around one central drive shaft. They could be rearranged around the actual flow of work. The productivity gains didn't come from electricity. They came from REDESIGNING THE ENTIRE FACTORY around it. AI is the same. Bolting it onto your existing process gets you a faster steam engine. The payoff comes when you redesign the work itself. (link to paper in comments)

Are we ready to have the conversation about how security checks in Namma Metro need to go? 1. Is a massive waste of time, increases friction, and causes burnout esp for short distance travel 2. Bengaluru's metro is the most expensive in the country. Why aren't we looking at ways to cut out frivolous expenses? In the picture - the evening crowd in queue for the security check at the Swami Vivekananda Metro Station. This metro station has just one entrance, and every evening there is a long queue with every person waiting for a good 7 to 8 minutes just to get in. Imagine reaching here, tired, after work, having to remove your bag, spread your arms, it's a humiliation ritual that serves no purpose.

We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy. One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what?? The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!

i don't know why this inspired me to write down all my thoughts about the topic, but here we go: defined by economists, a job is a set of tasks. to complete a task, you need tools and the necessary skills a common mistake is to compare AI to the industrial revolution. back then, advances in technology allowed the creation of tools to complete what were previously manual tasks. with the introduction of new tools, new skills were needed, both to design and operate them. that's why it created more jobs than it destroyed but that’s not what’s going on with AI. researchers are not trying to automate a task; they’re trying to automate the skill behind all of them: intelligence assuming they are able to do it, what’s left then? many people point to taste or judgment, but i’m skeptical. if we define judgment as the ability to make the right decision, i don’t see why that wouldn’t just be a proxy for intelligence another trait that’s impossible to automate is accountability. this is the one i thought would become the main bottleneck. for example, take the job of an accountant. are you paying them because they know the tax code, or because you want someone to blame when something goes wrong? knowing the tax code is essential, but so is their ability to convey trust in other words: the AI can write the code, but is it going to merge the PR? this sounds reasonable until you start thinking about how smart these things could get. probably, at some point on the intelligence curve, we might start trusting AI more than a human (think whether you would trust a mediocre accountant or gpt-10) i wrote all of this in a very assertive voice, but i'm as uncertain about it as anyone. some days it feels real, and others, pure science fiction
