@NorthSkyNelly I'm pretty sure only need picket fence too. That one seems to be almost as elusive as STEVE. I got lucky and saw STEVE with my first aurora but had no idea what it was for months until started learning.

I noticed some anomalies too. But I find coronal holes too unpredictable and hard to analyze for substorms. At least for my skillset. Missed many a substorm trying to go off just SWL during CHs. I jumped over to GOES monitored that tonight instead. That worked. Good ol GOES. 130am CDT

Always be wary when local news or metrologists start hyping. Only thing you should do after that is seek out expert. Irresponsible for anyone to forecast aurora this week (or anytime) unless also explicitly stating who to follow for real-time data or where to monitor it yourself

The reason I've said nothing during the super hype for the aurora forecasts over last week, including tonight, is because none of the data or conditions on the ground (equally important) have been anywhere close to solid enough to have ever suggested going out in Minnesota 🤷‍♂️

Last week, I went searching for an abandoned railroad tunnel 70 miles NE of Duluth in the Finland State Forest. Built 1957 for taconite mining. Longest rail tunnel in Minnesota at 1800 ft. After some driving, hiking & climbing I found it. Surprised at what was inside 🛤😨🧊🥶🚂
