2022 U.S. House Special Election- The Backstory: A 48-Way Primary Race This special election was triggered by the death of Rep. Don Young. A unique 'Top-Four' primary was held with 48 candidates. The winners were Sarah Palin (R), Nick Begich III (R), Al Gross (I), and Mary Peltola (D). After the primary, Al Gross withdrew and endorsed Peltola, leaving the three candidates you see here to compete in the ranked-choice general election.Lost Opportunity for Palin:The exhausted ballots came from Begich voters, who shared Palin’s Republican affiliation. In a non-RCV election, many might have consolidated behind Palin to prevent a Democratic win. If even a portion of these 11,243 votes had transferred to Palin, the outcome could have shifted:To tie Peltola’s 91,313, Palin needed 91,313 - 86,026 = 5,287 additional votes. If all 11,243 exhausted ballots had ranked Palin 2nd:Palin: 86,026 + 11,243 = 97,269 Peltola: 91,313 (unchanged, as none of these ballots ranked Peltola) Total active votes: 177,339 + 11,243 = 188,582 Majority threshold: ~94,292 Palin would win with 97,269 (~51.58%) vs. Peltola’s 91,313 (~48.42%). Even if only ~5,287 of the 11,243 (~47%) had gone to Palin, she would tie or narrowly win, showing how pivotal these ballots were. Why Ballots Exhausted: Approximately 20.89% of Begich voters didn’t rank either remaining candidate. Reasons could include:Dislike of Palin: Some Republican voters may have opposed Palin due to her polarizing reputation, preferring to abstain rather than support her. Lack of Voter Education: RCV was new in Alaska, and some voters may not have understood the importance of ranking multiple candidates. Protest Voting: Some ranked only Begich or a write-in, intentionally not supporting Palin or Peltola. Additionally, 15,514 Begich voters (28.83%) chose Peltola, indicating significant crossover appeal, possibly due to Peltola’s moderate stance or local ties as an Alaska Native.
