Wood gas vehicles, also known as gasogenes or wood gas cars, represent an intriguing chapter in automotive history where vehicles were powered by gas produced from burning wood or other biomass materials. The concept relies on a process called gasification, where wood or charcoal is burned under controlled conditions to produce a combustible mixture of gases, commonly referred to as wood gas or syngas. Early Development The technology of producing gas from wood goes back to the late 19th century but started to see practical application in motor vehicles in the early 20th century. The first known use of wood gasification was around 1901 in France, where Georges Imbert developed a wood gas generator for automotive applications. Rise During World War II The technology became particularly significant during World War II due to fuel shortages caused by the war. Wood gas vehicles were most commonly used in Europe, particularly in Germany, Sweden, and France, where petroleum was scarce but wood was abundant. It is estimated that by 1945, there were over 500,000 wood gas vehicles in use, mainly in those countries. How It Works A wood gas generator, typically mounted at the back or the side of a vehicle, burns wood in a controlled environment of low oxygen. This process generates wood gas, which consists primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen. The gas is then cooled and filtered to remove tar and particulates before being routed into the engine's combustion chamber, where it is burned to produce power, similar to conventional fuel. Post-War Decline After World War II, the use of wood gas vehicles declined sharply as petroleum fuels became widely available again. The vehicles were slower and had less power compared to their gasoline counterparts, and managing the generator was labor-intensive and dirty work. Modern Interest In more recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in wood gas as a renewable, low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels, particularly in rural areas or regions with abundant biomass resources. Enthusiasts and environmentalists explore modernized versions of wood gas generators for both automotive and stationary applications, driven by sustainability concerns. Current Usage and Research Today, wood gas is part of broader research into sustainable and renewable energy sources. While not mainstream, wood gas technology is being explored in contexts such as developing countries for powering vehicles or generating electricity, especially in areas lacking centralized power or where biomass is plentiful. Despite being largely a historical curiosity, the technology behind wood gas vehicles highlights a creative and environmentally adaptive approach during times of resource scarcity, and it remains a relevant example of renewable energy technology applicable in specific contexts today.

Cuba in 2026 is running cars on wood gasification, the same tech used in WWII Europe when fuel ran out. 80 years later, one guy with a metal bucket and orange hose just reinvented it in his driveway.

I've built wood gasification systems. They did that in the war years because of FUEL SHORTAGES. Like the ones we are experiencing TODAY due to Trump's War. Had they had EV's & solar panels back then . . . . . . .
