Tunnelling prep is in full swing at Clarinda. Crews are working hard to dig a launch site for tunnel boring machines, and putting together all the key supports they’ll need on their journey. Tunnelling starts this year!
🛠️ It’s all happening in Heatherton. This is the site of the future train stabling facility, where two tunnel entrances are under construction. Trains will come to the surface here for maintenance and washing when the new rail line opens in 2035.

What's actually happening on the Suburban Rail Loop?
What are we building in Mount Waverley? A one stop shop for making the tunnels safe. It’s a site that holds all the emergency essentials for an underground train line - a backup control centre and a ventilation system for the tunnels.

Dun dun dun duuun… 🎶 We’re setting the stage for tunnel boring machines Aayushi and Belinda in Clarinda. Excavation of the launch site is underway – tunnelling starts this year.

Crews are digging deep in Clarinda, with the tunnel boring machine launch site to reach a depth of 19.5m ⛏️ The mega machines will launch from here to carve out the southern section of SRL East tunnels. Tunnelling starts this year. Trains taking passengers in 2035 🚆
The first of our tunnel boring machines are being assembled on site in Burwood, set to start their journey later this year. In the meantime, the team is hard at work building the giant sheds that'll help minimise noise, dust and light once excavation is in full swing.
Is the Suburban Rail Loop actually happening? Yes.
Works are powering ahead at Clarinda, with excavation now underway for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch site. TBMs will launch from here later this year to start carving the twin tunnels. Lucky we love a bit of mud 😉
Works are happening all over the Burwood site. Crews are building large sheds to manage noise, dust and light. One shed will cover the tunnel boring machine launch site, and the other will store excavated rock and soil from the tunnels before it’s safely trucked off site.
What’s happening here❓ We’re building an emergency support facility for SRL East. This facility will: ➡️ Supply air to the tunnels ➡️ Host a backup control centre ➡️ Provide emergency service access from the tunnels to the surface
🏗️ So much progress on SRL – take a look! Here’s the latest update from the Clayton site: 👷Crews are building the underground support walls for the station – they’ll start excavation soon 👷Work has started to build the underground connection to the existing metro station.
