If your practices are inclusive and accessible from the start then inclusion doesn’t feel like extra work. It’s the work that is done, therefore it’s not extra work. It becomes extra when you have to squeeze it in rather than plan for the time and resources.

Some configurations are accessible for some and inaccessible for others, so realistically multiple formats are necessary to meet as many needs as possible. Often people don’t know which formats to plan for so either don’t ask or don’t plan them, which then creates work.

The funny thing about accessibility is that there is no one accessible or ‘fully accessible’ format. Whether it’s easy read, plain English, alt text, audio, large font, colour schemes, BSL or contrast there is are so many (in)accessible ways to convey information.

I see some people being condescending on Twitter about how people join {well-know tech company with bad reputation of the month}. My take is that joining Meta / Uber / Apple etc for many: 1. Means a massive step-up in career options vs what they have 2. Means a life-changing $$
