Over 30 billion smartphones have been shipped worldwide since 2009. Where do you think everyone's photos, videos, streaming apps, cloud backups, AI conversations and digital archives live? Not on your phone. They live in data centres. If we're going to talk about the environmental impact of data centres, we also need to talk about the demand that creates them. Consumer data trends matter just as much as consumer purchasing trends. It's not only buying the latest technology that drives expansion it's billions of people continuously creating, uploading, syncing, storing and streaming more digital content every year. I agree that data centres have environmental costs. They consume enormous amounts of electricity, water and land, and they affect surrounding communities and ecosystems. But digital consumerism is also part of that equation. Every photo kept forever, every video streamed, every cloud backup, every AI prompt and every social media platform increases demand for computing infrastructure. If we truly wanted to slow global data centre expansion, it would require behavioural change on a massive scale. Imagine one billion people deleting much of their cloud storage, reducing streaming, extending the life of their devices, and dramatically cutting their daily digital usage. Whether that exact number is one billion or more is debatable but the point is that it would take an enormous global shift in behaviour, not just more efficient servers. Renewable energy can reduce emissions, and many companies are investing heavily in cleaner power, but cleaner electricity doesn't eliminate the growing demand for computing. The uncomfortable truth is that nearly every organization including environmental groups, businesses, governments, charities and media organizations depends on digital infrastructure, cloud computing and social media to coordinate, communicate and operate. So here's the conversation I'd rather have: Who profits from consumerism? Who profits from data centres? Who profits from protests? And who bears the environmental and economic costs while simply trying to survive? We're already seeing companies experiment with underwater data centres for cooling, while others are exploring orbital computing infrastructure. Technology will continue to evolve because global demand continues to grow. The real question isn't whether we need data centres. It's whether society is willing to reduce its dependence on the digital services that require them. Would you support internet "rest days" for example, limiting non-essential internet access one day each week to reduce energy demand and digital consumption? Most people would probably say no. And that's exactly why data centres will continue to expand.

ICP changes the assumption: Computation doesn’t have to leave the network to become real. Claude changes another: Reasoning doesn’t have to leave the model to become useful. Put them together and you get something most people still aren’t seeing yet: AI systems that are both intelligent AND persistent by design. Not stateless prompts. Not brittle agent wrappers. But durable software entities that think, execute, and persist in the same environment. The question is no longer “can AI code?” It’s: What happens when AI becomes the runtime layer of the internet itself?
