Apparently, yesterday @midjourney pivoted from AI image generation to...whole body ultrasound , presumably AI-augmented. I spent some time trying to find hard data and did not come up with much beyond the video. Some thoughts based on the X reactions today. 1) "Nobody's ever done this before." This seems to be a variant on ultrasound tomography, with Butterfly sensors arranged in rings. Ultrasound tomography is not new, with commercial systems available for breast imaging. The system proposed here seems very similar to Garrett et al 2024 (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11…) which provided fuzzy images of the abdomen and extremity. By collating sound wave return from the ring array the system can attempt to minimize artifact from bone and gas. So, we have known this is possible since 2024. 2) "So easy for the patient." The system requires the patient to submerge themselves in water. For commercial breast UT, this simply requires laying on top of a shaped tank, but not going fully in water. As some people have difficulty lying on a DEXA or CT scanner (the latter of which can image in seconds) I will be interested to see how this is received by patients. 3) "This will revolutionize medical imaging." Ultrasound is limited by bone, air (lung, stomach, bowel) and depth of penetration. In the abdomen, this system can "see" around bowel and spine by adding together the full set of images. There is no workaround for the head or lungs and you'll notice that's why they didn't offer any pictures of those areas. It also means it won't be great at screening inside the stomach, intestine, or colon. I also note the volunteers appear fairly skinny. Ultrasound is always more limited in heavier patients. 4) "But AI can fix it!"...not really. Current DL-based reconstruction techniques require at least some undersampling of a region in order to reconstruct the image. You'll get a lovely picture of the outside of the skull. I can AI-upsample a fuzzy photograph but that doesn't mean what comes out of it actually existed. We have a variant of this issue already with MRI DL reconstruction. 5) "But this is better than MRI in the 1970s!" Yes, true. But the competition is not 1970s MRI, it's modern CT/MRI/US and most especially low-field MRI. For brain, for example, low-field MRI is already diagnostic quality and doesn't need shielding. A low-field scanner costs 50k and can be used in an ICU or put in a van. Why would I send a patient to get an experimental full body US when there's whole body MRI available that's already diagnostic quality? science.org/doi/abs/10.112… 6) "The FDA has no idea how to regulate this." This one made me laugh. There's an entire set pathway for this. Commercial ultrasound tomography already exists as an easy reference of a similar technology in the application. If they haven't submitted to the FDA, it's because they plan to try at a later date, or because they're not planning on submitting it at all. Do I think this is new and exciting? Yes. It looks like it's going to be great for body composition, and I do think there will be improvement in the future. Is it currently medical-grade diagnostic quality? No, not based on what they showed us. Apparently in-person there was a great hand demo. I don't see why that would be an improvement over routine US or MRI in visualizing hand soft tissues. To quote @khakrish: "It feels like all the same problems as full body MRI with the added problem of an unproven imaging modality and no FDA clearance."

The Dead Internet Theory was a conspiracy. The idea that the internet is no longer human. That bots and AI have quietly replaced real people. It started on anonymous message boards in 2019. Most people dismissed it. Stanford, Imperial College London, and the Internet Archive just measured it. They used the Wayback Machine to scan every new website published between 2022 and 2025. Thirty-three months of the internet, captured and classified. They applied one of the most advanced AI text detectors in the world to every page. 35.3% of all newly published websites were AI-generated or AI-assisted. 17.6% were completely AI-generated. No human involvement at all. In late 2022, before ChatGPT launched, that number was zero. In three years, more than a third of the new internet became synthetic. Not over decades. Not over a generation. Three years. Then they measured what that is doing to the internet itself. Semantic diversity is falling. The range of ideas, perspectives, and ways of saying things is narrowing. As AI content increases, the internet sounds more and more like one voice. Because it is one voice. The same models producing the same patterns across millions of pages. Positive sentiment is rising. Everything sounds upbeat. Polished. Confident. Helpful. The internet is getting friendlier while getting emptier. The tone improves as the substance disappears. The lead researcher, Jonáš Doležal at Imperial College London, said this to 404 Media: "I find the sheer speed of the AI takeover of the web quite staggering. After decades of humans shaping it, a significant portion of the internet has become defined by AI in just three years." Separately, Cloudflare reported that nearly a third of all internet traffic now comes from bots. Imperva reported that automated traffic surpassed human traffic for the first time in 2024. If you read my previous threads on Model Collapse and Retrieval Collapse, this is the final chapter. Model Collapse showed that AI trained on AI gets dumber. Retrieval Collapse showed that search engines indexing AI content get emptier. This paper shows the source of both problems. The internet itself is being replaced. The researchers are now working with the Internet Archive to build a live monitoring tool. A real-time tracker of how much of the internet is human and how much is not. The fact that we need a tool to measure how much of the internet is still real is the finding.

This will probably get suppressed, but I don’t care. It’s time. Elon Musk promised DOGE would save taxpayers $1 TRILLION. But, it actually just paved his path to become a trillionaire. Let’s follow the money. - “Claimed savings”: Final DOGE claim was $214B saved. The independently verifiable amount was less than 5% of that, not including the actually costs. Costs - The firing-and-rehiring churn cost ~ $135B. - Week one: 17 inspector generals fired who return $26 per $1 spent and catch the very things happening right now with the Trump family ventures, Elon’s ventures, AI, etc. - They didn’t touch the $850B Pentagon budget that has never passed an audit. - Also untouched were the $38B in government contracts flowing to Elon. - Data privacy breaches by DOGE employees And before you say that he worked for free, he did not have to file a financial disclosure because he "worked for free". This looks more like a workaround. Elon donated over $290M to Trump’s campaign. The morning Trump was sworn in, Musk's companies faced $2.37B in legal exposure across 11 federal agencies. Then he was handed power over those same agencies. Inside the first quarter, six of the regulators investigating Elon’s companies were cut, closed, or told to stand down. So, he spent ~$290M to elect Trump and he left office with his cases dead and SpaceX ~$6B RICHER in NEW defense contracts. That is not a Department of Government Efficiency. And as someone who was on the inside when this all went down, the strategy behind finding these contracts was incredibly inefficient and just caused defense contractors, such as Booz Allen Hamilton, to merely change their name from consulting to technology. It merely caused word changes in contracts. Contracts that are bloated and should be cut, weren’t even looked at. And in the end, it cost tax payers exponentially more than it saved, including data privacy, Just want to call out the reality of how Space X and this shady IPO even came about.

If you can’t tax billionaires and trillionaire because “its unrealized gains until they cash out,” then stop letting them leverage that wealth for loans, as collateral, or as equity. If it’s not real enough to tax, it shouldn’t be real enough to leverage. This is why we say the system is rigged in favor of the super wealthy. Abolish billionaires, tax them out of existence, protect working people.

I think our elders didn’t do a good job at modeling how friendship changes from adolescence/young adulthood to 30s and beyond. A lot of us think friendships are supposed to look & feel like they did when we were in high-school & college. & thats just not realistic.

You have noticed it. ChatGPT feels dumber than it used to. Your prompts that worked six months ago produce worse results now. The writing sounds flatter. The ideas sound safer. The internet itself feels like it is shrinking. Every article reads the same. Every email sounds the same. Every answer sounds like it was written by the same voice. You thought it was you. It is not you. Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge published a paper in Nature proving what is happening. They call it Model Collapse. Here is the mechanism in one sentence. AI trained on AI-generated data gets dumber every generation until it forgets what real human data looked like. The internet is filling with AI-generated content. Blog posts. Articles. Reviews.
