i should point out that Powershell was originally called Monad the role of shells and monads is pretty clear in category theory land, maybe not in FP land
why am i having flashbacks to FP while doing shell programming? i am trying to write a login script that changes the user working directory, an effect - but if it spawns a subshell, it is "pure" and does not change the parent
multix 'tty' and 'history' commands are familiar to shell users but strange concepts for programmers, call stack and closures are just not sophisticated enough to manage side effects in first class containers (monads) but shells are natural monads, no need to agonize over haskell
all this fuss over effects, zlayers etc. are basically trying to reimplement what operating system shells were already built to do namely how do i get a copy of the current env state (or default env state) and are mutations persisted back to the parent shell or discarded

tools are functions - very intuitive to run a function interactively - but what if I want to run more than one? everyone hates how functional programming tries to compose functions because ergonomics are awful so we introduce 'cursors' as an easy way to carry over function parameters (adjoints) let's assume foo is a function that takes x and y as param 1/x
