Support for opensource, privacy, sovereignty and censorship resistance is something really nice to see in the ethereum ecosystem. But please listen to someone who has created a company and a product around those values, has kept it going for 8+ years and has paid the consequences of building something that adheres to these values. Learn from my mistakes. I fear the way you are advertising these values, you are not reaching anybody new. You are preaching to the choir. The way I see you bang the drum for these values is only going to appeal to the people who are already strong believers in them. I don't see anyone trying to think of how to bring new people in and introduce them to these concepts, explain why they are good and incentivize them to use them. Incentives rule everything around us. "I will build cool things on Ethereum, the blessed world computer, or die trying" does not bring in new people. It makes us sound like a cult. It's offputting. Instead I want to see successful apps on and around ethereum using the right CROPS values and still succeeding in bringing in new people, incentivizing users and monetizing successfully so we can have a sustainable ecosystem. I want to see us mentor new people towards achieving them and creating such companies. I want to see you all thrive while building opensource apps. Not struggle for 2-3 years, burn out and leave and then be replaced by new zealots for our cult. It pains me to see people burn out by listening to well intended but otherwise completely dangerous advice on how to build products. And yes that will mean some compromises on the way because in the end that's the real world. And you are building apps for other people not only for yourself in your ivory tower. I will help and assist everyone who wants to build opensource, sovereign apps, privacy apps, CROPS or whatever cool kids call them nowadays as long as they are actually solving real problems and trying to get new users in. I want to see ethereum win. And I will do anything I can to see this come to fruition.

just to state the obvious: think there's a collison course between those who believe research and science should be open and those who believe we are in an accelerating singularity curve. I have many smart friends who have believed both for a while but seeing more and more their realization that these beliefs will be in conflict. I for one believe that America and the west needs open and distributed access to research and computation and sharing of ideas at all times.

Ethereum has been winning, is winning, and has never lost. The most-used subprotocol or subchain by actual users is EVM-based. Every major wallet either supports ETH natively or is built entirely on EVM architecture. Every chain that tried to compete failed to attract meaningful developer adoption. Algorand, Tezos, Polkadot - none crossed the threshold. Most “ETH killers” eventually found a single niche and settled: NEAR became a solid intent-based bridge layer, TRON became a USDT wallet. That’s not winning, that’s narrowing. Cheap L2s never retained long-term users either. The pattern is always the same: airdrop announcement, usage spike, MEV bots flood in because gas is cheap, then silence. Base is a clean example of that cycle. Ethereum sets the vision. Every fork and new proposal chases the EIP backlog because the entire infrastructure stack - Etherscan, Infura, Alchemy, Blockscout - standardized on EVM. Deviate from that standard and you’re on your own. That’s why deploying a forked contract to TRON is a nightmare, why Optimism shipped multiple broken hard forks chasing weird gas estimation edge cases, and why dapp developers refuse to write chains of if/else blocks just to handle behavioral differences across 10+ forked EVMs. No one wants that complexity in their JavaScript. No wallet team wants to maintain it either. Conform to EVM or get left behind. Ethereum didn’t enforce that rule - the ecosystem did.

We are allowing a confluence of temporary circumstances to affect our views of the Ethereum and ETH thesis and trajectory, which is going Wonderfully. Ethereum overcame a 2022-24 EF that was imo rudderless and willfully ignorant to the realities of the app layer growth. Ethereum survived the previous US administration basically trying to shut us down. Ethereum delivered the merge, blobs, a flourishing L1+L2 ecosystem, a dominant market share of app capital, and an onchain revolution that's rewriting the foundations of the global economic order at the highest levels. Right now, all over the world, corps and govts are launching and scaling RWAs, L1 defi protocols, and L2s at a breathtaking pace. Many major governments, including all of the largest ones, are actively working on stablecoin/defi legislation that tacitly assumes that they have no choice but to get in the onchain arena and compete. On Ethereum. So... and I can't stress this enough... What the Fuck Do We Think Is Wrong Exactly? We will do as we have always done: Play long term games with long term people. Build, grow. And expect global ubiquity for Ethereum and ETH. Because it's coming, fast.

you should interrogate all software you use daily with codex. there is a lot of low hanging fruit. for example, i was wondering why solidity compilers take such a long time to download. for years i thought they had a slow server. turned out the culprit was a progress bar renderer that has used tiny chunk increments and reassembling bytes instead of bytearray or a file output. fixing all this sped it up 42x.
