@girdley Not just Japanese companies (though it was something we did in my team in Japan), P&G has taken this “most junior person speaks first” approach for decades for precisely this reason. Getting the senior person to shut up and actively encourage this is the hardest part.

@MikeFritzell I’m not close to the individual names, but I’d be tempted to look at Morinaga or other Japanese names, particularly if you think the yen will strengthen. Once they actually take shelf price increases, they tend to hold them rather than give back, so could see margin gains.

@MikeFritzell @zeroxpectation Overall, need to look at total commodity picture - sugar and milk are also major cost inputs, so it’s not just cocoa driving overall production cost. FX also has a big impact, and the commodity / FX hedging is done in an integrated way.

@zeroxpectation @MikeFritzell Yes. 6-12 months, sometimes out a bit longer. Percentage of needs covered declines the longer the timeframe, but beyond 1 year it’s typically less than 50%, often considerably less. Source: I used to run the hedging program for one region of a major chocolate producer.

@CantillonCH Whining seems like a pretty equal opportunity area of society across age groups - boomer whining about taxes on high income / assets, estate taxes, impossibility of cutting / adequately funding social security, “kids don’t work hard”, etc all spring to mind quite readily.
