This is what happened to over 350,000 Kashmiri Pandits. Families packed whatever they could carry and fled the Valley, leaving behind homes, temples, and sacred spaces that had stood for centuries. Fear, violence, and uncertainty became their new reality. Kashmir wasn’t just home, it was a center of learning, culture, and spirituality. Scholars like Panini and Patanjali walked these lands. Temples and libraries thrived. That world was ripped apart overnight. 36 years later, the wounds remain. The recent attack in Pahalgam is a painful reminder that violence and fear have never fully left the Valley. For many Kashmiri Pandits, the dream of returning home safely is still out of reach. It won't remain for long. - humanoid robots aren't *everywhere* - flying drones aren't *everywhere* - can do work making you valuable to others without specialized/hard-won/secret knowledge (pre-40s) - still legal to manually drive to go where you like - distinct global cultures and languages still exist - most people still share the same pre-/non-digital formative experiences - there are no large scale wars or trade breakdowns between nuclear states or global powers - assassinations are still mostly condemned - boomers are still with us (extreme moderating force) - millennial midlife crises over parent loss and childlessness hasn't yet begun (highly destabilizing) - majority-minority demographic flips haven't yet occurred

I remember when I was young - my first year at Red Hat, I sat down with one of our most senior engineers, avid to learn, and asked him if it was more important to read code, or write code, if I wanted to become a great programmer. This was especially important for Linux, which had a big culture of code reviews - reading code. I'll never forget his answer: neither. I don't have a good level of confidence that I understand code that I read or wrote. I only truly understand code that I have debugged. This stuck with me. And I think it is important for young programmers to keep in mind today in the age of LLMs. It doesn't matter who writes your code. You will truly only understand it, when you debug it.
