The one and only @mcuban on the future of robotics last night @tbpn.
I had the good fortune of speaking with him about 5 years ago on all kinds of robots and whatever he said, did actually play out in the years following that conversation we had.
So here he is again — I don’t want to say I agree or disagree with him. He has an interesting perspective that I wouldn’t easily dismiss esp on humanoid robots🦾
.@mcuban says humanoid robots won't last more than 5-10 years.
Instead, we'll "design the house to fit the robot, and design the robot to fit the house."
"You could create a house where the pantry, the refrigerator, and the washing machines were hidden behind the garage, if
Hi Folks,
Quit my corporate job and trying to start a manufacturing business. I choose a market item. GI metal box. Not able to meet the costing target with virgin raw material. Need some support or leads who can help me get scrap/salvaged GI sheets... Thanks in advance
Stitching a suit from Bangkok street tailor vs an Italian master tailor:
The result will not be the same.
Not because of the fabric or brand.
Because of the hand behind it.
I’ve seen this mistake repeat across factories in Bharat.
An importer or factory owner goes to a local toolmaker, hands over an existing product and says:
“Copy this exactly.”
The response is always confident:
“Ji sir, bilkul ho jayega. Isme kya badi baat hai?”
Months later, the tool arrives.
On the surface, it looks right.
But once production starts:
• parts fail
• endless trials
• machines need constant stoppages
Money, time, and momentum burned.
Because tooling is not copying metal.
It’s:
• judgment.
• experience
• 1000s of small decisions you can’t see on a drawing
That’s why this matters to us.
Good toolmakers learn these things over many years by making similar tools again and again, learning from mistakes, and improving with experience.
Two tools can look the same from the outside, but only the one made with experience will work reliably inside the factory.
Cheap tools often look fine in the beginning, but they slowly create bigger and more expensive problems over time.
Experienced toolmakers may charge more at the start, but they help factories avoid delays, reduce waste, and save money in the long run.
In manufacturing, choosing experience over price is what keeps factories running smoothly.
the fastest way to become useful:
pick one hard domain and tear it apart until the pieces feel obvious.
you don’t need talent.
you need immersion.
bury yourself in the primitives.
understand the lowest-level units of the craft so deeply that higher layers become trivial.
every real skill is built this way:
circuits → hardware intuition
calculus → control systems
mechanics → robotics
algorithms → systems design
once the primitives click, complexity collapses.
most people run from difficulty. they jump to frameworks, shortcuts, abstractions. then wonder why they never become dangerous.
stop stacking conveniences.
strip everything down.
learn the fundamentals until the world becomes transparent.
the people who win aren’t faster or smarter.
they simply know the roots, not just the branches.
10 things about manufacturing I wish I knew sooner:
- Good workers are gold. Treat them well.
- Cheap raw material always costs more later.
- One late delivery can lose one big client.
- Check every batch. Trust, but still check.
- Power cuts will ruin your plan - always keep backup.
- Government rules change fast. Stay updated.
- Good packaging sells more than you think.
- Small quality issues become big money loss later.
- Learn to say “no” to bad orders.
- Simple systems beat big fancy machines.
If you run a small unit and need help, I share weekly breakdowns to help you stop big mistakes.
