A paper in Science just showed a bacterial reverse transcriptase (Drt3b) that synthesizes repeating DNA using the protein itself as the template - no RNA or DNA guide needed for one strand. Specific amino acids in the enzyme directly dictate the AC repeat sequence. Protein → DNA
